Snakes on Songs on Fark

Monday, May 1st, 2006

Fark has done an AudioEdit contest to come up with a theme song for Snakes on a Plane. They’re a little bit behind the times on this one. I haven’t had a chance to go through the content yet, but give it a listen.

Snakes on Songs XI

Wednesday, April 26th, 2006

We’ve got a few new songs today.

I would especially recommend M.F. Snakes on a M.F. Plane, it’s a cool accoustic guitar thing. I really liked it a lot. They say it was recorded for the Tagworld contest, but I couldn’t find it to on Tagworld’s website to vote for it… too bad.

Melancholy Trolley Dolly by Swince (on the ATD12 Mix Tape)

M.F. Snakes on a M.F. Plane by Karate Monkey Death Car

Snakes on a Plane by Rob

Snakes on a Plane by Asp

Snakes by Snakes say Hisss!

Snakes on DCLugi On the Radio

Monday, April 24th, 2006

DCLugi (also known as David Coyne) did a radio interview on WZLX during the Karlson and McKenzie show the other day talking about Snakes on a Plane and his Early Auditions video. Give it a listen if you’re interested in hearing more from DCLugi:

SNakes on a Tagworld Contest - Day 4

Sunday, April 23rd, 2006

The Tagworld tallies continue, thanks to snakecharmer:

10. Runaway Pheonix with Snakes on a Plane 144 votes (SOAP)
9. Ben Rusch with Wash Your Mouth Out 145 votes (SOAP)
8. Nascence with Black votes 157 (?)
7. Zachery with Serious Problem 158 votes (SOAP)
6. 50412 with Snakes on a Plane 159 votes (SOAP)
5. John Elkins with Keep it Moving 225 votes (BS)
4.. Former Fat Boys with Snakes on a Plane 234 votes (SOAP)
3. The guesstimates w/Two Snakes on a Plane 284 votes (SOAP)
2. Hollywood.mp3 at 378 votes (BS)
1. Futuristic Sex Robots w/Snakes on a Plane at 479 votes (SOAP)

As snakecharmer points out “Wizardz of Rhyme have left the list but are not forgotten in the mean time we get the addition of Nascence” which may or may not be Snakes on a Plane related. It appears to be something of a judgement call.

Also, for those of you who don’t know, I’m currently in law school. And this weekend I’ve officially entered finals mode, which means my time to do things like respond to emails and post updates is limited. I’m still going to maintain this page, but if you try to get in touch with me and I don’t respond quickly (or at all), or if updates are slow in coming, I apologize.

I’ll be done with finals by June, and then this site will be full speed all summer.

UPDATE: I just checked and voting ends on MAY 30th. I’m not sure if nightly updates are worthwhile for a whole month. Do you guys want to keep doing these?

Snakes on a Tagworld Contest - Day 3

Saturday, April 22nd, 2006

The Tagworld saga continues. Thanks to snakecharmer for continuing to create running vote tallies (since Tagworld chooses not to):

10. Wizardz of Rhyme w/Planes on a Snake 112 votes (SOAP)
9. Runaway Pheonix with Snakes on a Plane 123 votes (SOAP)
8. Ben Rusch with Wash Your Mouth Out 136 votes
7. Former Fat Boys with Snakes on a Plane 138 votes (SOAP)
6. 50412 with Snakes on a Plane 140 votes (SOAP)
5. Zachery with Serious Problem 155 votes (SOAP)
4. John Elkins with Keep it Moving 168 votes (BS)
3. The guesstimates w/Two Snakes on a Plane 175 votes (SOAP)
2. Hollywood.mp3 at 325 votes (BS)
1. Futuristic Sex Robots w/Snakes on a Plane at 378 votes (SOAP)

Since Tagworld has a bunch of songs that weren’t written by true Snakes on a Plane fans, it’s been suggested that we create a list of songs to encourage people to listen to and consider voting for. Clearly the songs in the top ten are already covered, but what other songs have you voted for that aren’t listed?

Let’s make sure New Line has a solid selection to chose from (none of this Hollywood.mp3 crap).

Snakes on a Tagworld Contest Update

Friday, April 21st, 2006

Yesterday I badmouthed the Tagworld contest listing lots of problems with their voting website. It looks like they’ve taken the time to fix some of my initial problems. For example, the “random” sort now actually shows you different songs each time, the vote counters seem to work, the pop-ups aren’t nearly as confusing, and you get to see 12 (up from 10) songs per page.

They still don’t allow you to scroll quickly to bands in the depths of the alphabet (bands starting with the letter ‘Z’ are screwed) and there’s no way to show the top vote getters, but I’m glad they fixed a lot of the problems. I’m still dismayed by the sheer number of bands with songs totally unrelated to the movie, but hopefully we can vote them out (and hopefully New Line won’t pick one of those as the winner).

Anyway, reader snakecharmer was nice enough to tally the current leaders:

10. The guesstimates w/Two Snakes on a Plane 63 votes (SOAP)
9. Shanky Drank with Final Snakes 64 (SOAP)
8. Kyle.mcmahon with Gone 73 votes (BS)
7. Wizardz of Rhyme with Planes on a Snakes 82 votes (SOAP)
6. Runaway Pheonix with Snakes on a Plane 90 votes (SOAP)
5. Ben Rusch with Wash your Mouth out 111 votes (BS)
4. Zachery with Serious Problem 117 votes (SOAP)
3. 50412 with Snakes on a Plane 120 votes (SOAP)
2. Futuristic Sex Robots w/Snakes on a Plane at 260 votes (SOAP)
1. Hollywood.mp3 at 277 votes (BS)

Let’s see if we can vote Hollywood.mp3 off this list, their song is an infidel… totally non-snakes related.

And if anyone feels like keeping these tallies up to date in the comments, I’ll post daily updates. Please post your suggestions of bands to vote for in the comments. You can also look through songs posted here for suggestions.

Snakes on a Tagworld Contest’s Bad Webpage (UPDATE)

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

The Tagworld song contest is live and you can now vote on submissions. I’ve got a lot of problems with the webpage:

    • You need to register to vote
    • It seems that the voting system is somewhat broken (when I logged in for the first time I was told that I’d already voted for 6 people and had 4 votes remaining… I hadn’t voted for anybody, I just registered).
    • Why can you only vote for 10? Who does it hurt if I vote for 100?
    • When I voted in Firefox, I got a weird pop-up that looked like an error message and said ‘9′. Did that mean I had nine votes remaining?
    • I apparently can’t change my vote once it’s been entered.
    • There’s no indication of how many songs have been submitted.
    • You’re only shown a small number of songs at once. It’s very hard to find a song that you like because you can only see ten at time sorted alphabetically or randomly. You can’t skip and you can’t search. So, if you’re looking for a song by a band starting with the letter ‘Z’, you’re going to have to spend a LOT of time searching. I’d be seriously surprised if the winners all started with the letter ‘A’… it’s just easier to vote for them.
    • There’s no way to link to a song you’d like to encourage people to vote for. If I found a good song, all I could do was tell you the name and force you fight your way through the lousy interface to find it. Why can’t I send someone a link that would let them vote for the one song?

This would be a lot more user friendly if we were provided with a full list of all submissions. I don’t need to see the band’s cover art, just show me a long list with the name of each band, the name of their song, a way to play the song on that page, and a way to vote. Don’t limit the number of votes I get, or at least allow me to change my mind once I’ve voted. If you have to place the songs on different pages due to the number of submissions allow people to link to individual pages and individual songs, and add a means of skipping quickly between non-consequetive pages, or add a search feature.

So, yeah, I’m underwhelmed by the voting process. I was expecting more.

Boo to Tagworld. You’ve still go time, you can make this better.

UPDATE 4/20/06 at 10:00am - it appears that TagWorld has made an effort to fix some of the problems, they now list how many songs were submitted (425) and the system that counts how many songs you’ve voted for is not broken in a DIFFERENT way. Here are the new problems:

    • The voting system is broken in a new manner. I had voted for one song, which it said correctly. When I voted for a second song, the counter for the number of times I’ve voted jumped to three, don’t know why.
    • When you click on the play icon for a song it just brings you to an error page. You can’t actually listen to the songs. Bah.
    • The ‘Random’ sort isn’t random, every time you load the page in ‘Random’ you get the same ten songs. I suspect that a vast majority of the top 25 vote getting songs will start with the letter ‘A’ or be in the first group of 10 ‘Random’ songs.

All I know is that if there’s a significant number of songs in the top-25 that are not directly Snakes on a Plane related, it’s going to be disappointing.

Also, people are complaining in the comments about songs that were submitted but not included.  All in all, a real coup for Tagworld.  But, you know, the bloody failed kind.

Snakes on Songs XII

Tuesday, April 18th, 2006

We just had a big batch of fan-made songs the other day (the end of the TagWorld contest submission period created this rush, I’m sure) and today I have a few more for you. Enjoy:

Snakes On a Plane by The Turtlenecks

Fuck You Snakes by Captain Foamy

The Snake by Fenton Barnes and the Gold Diggers

Two Snakes on a Plane by The Guesstimates

04 Warm Blood (Snakes on a Plane) by B for Brontosaurus

Again, I’m surffering from “not enough time” syndrome, so I haven’t actually given these a listen yet. How are they?

Snakes on Songs XI

Sunday, April 16th, 2006

I’ve built up a big backlog of songs. Here’s a bunch of them (I’m pretty sure they’ve all been submitted to Tagworld as well):

Snakes on a Plane by The Reverand Jody Hicks

We Are Snakes and We Hate You by Inverted Silence

Snakes on a Plane by The Codenames

Snakes on a Plane by Jamal Cuervo

Snakes on a Plane by Futuristic Sex Robotz

The Reverand Jody Hick song is a new version of this one I posted a long time ago. The rest I haven’t yet gotten a chance to listen to, how are they?

Snakes on Songs X

Tuesday, April 11th, 2006

“You got a problem, take a number and a name, ’cause we got snakes on this motherfucking plane.”

I don’t think I’ve posted a rap song before, and today I’m posting three. The first two of these were submitted to the Tagworld contest. If these are indicative of the quality of the Tagworld submissions, I’m really looking forward to hearing the winners.

Serious Problems by Zachary

SoaP by Geoff

Snakes on a Plane by F16

I’m really a big fan of the first one, which I know was submitted to Tagworld. The second one makes use of real Samuel L. Jackson dialogue from both his NPR interview and the unofficial/official trailer. I haven’t had a chance to listen to the third the one yet… any good?

I’ve also decided not to post submissions to the Tagworld contest that don’t include vocals. As good as many of those submissions are, they really aren’t Snakes on a Plane specific, it’s the lyrics that really make these songs hit. So, if you’ve submitted a song wtithout lyrics, and I haven’t posted it, don’t think I wasn’t impressed… just that I’m narrowly focused.

UPDATE: Links fixed.

Snakes on Songs IX

Thursday, April 6th, 2006

Have I mentiond that DC Lugi is my god? Well, he is. He’s collaborated with Subatomic Warp on my favorite fan song, and he made the great early audition video. A few nights ago he sent me the song that he’s submitting to the tagworld contest, give it a listen:

Enough is Enough by DC Lugi

I also have one more song and one new audio trailer to post:

Snakes on a Plane by Andrew Grossman

Snakes on a Plane Audio Trailer by John

I think this is only the second audio trailer I’ve had since the first great one by Subatomic Warp.

Snakes on a Tagworld Contest

Wednesday, April 5th, 2006

Only seven days left to submit your song for the Tagworld songwriting contest. Just a reminder. Also, anyone submitting a song should send it my way as well, I’d love to post them.

Previous discussions of Tagworld here.

Snakes on Songs VIII

Monday, April 3rd, 2006

Here’s two new songs for you. The first is a song I got a few days ago, it’s a remixed version of the sound clip of Samuel L. Jackson from a few days ago. The second was initially intended to be in the Zebro show but wasn’t ultimately made into a video. Enjoy:

Snakes on a Real Plane II

Wednesday, March 29th, 2006

A few days I posted about nootropic describing his calls to a few airlines to find out if he could bring Snakes on a Plane. I lamented at the time that he didn’t record his phone calls… I assumed they’d be funny. Well, it seems as though Philip had the same idea that I had. Here we go:

These things are RIPE for remixing, have at it.

Snakes on Songs VII

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

I’ve got two Snakes songs for you today:

New Cobra Mix by THE SLATS

Funky Snakes on a Funky Plane by hench

The first one is really good and well produced, which is always a plus. The second was a submission to the tagworld contest and isn’t specifically about snakes… it’s an instrumental. Take a look if you’re interested.

Snakes on an NPR Remix

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

Ok, I was emailed this somewhat strange file tonight that takes clips from the recent NPR piece, the older NPR piece, and the possible Samuel L. Jackson audio clip and puts them over a beat. I’m not entirely clear on the point, but I present to you:

What is… Snakes on a Plane Remix by Jeff R.

Snakes on a Podcast

Friday, March 24th, 2006

A reader pointed me to this Podcast at The Watercooler all about Snakes on a Plane. They play clips from the non-trailier/trailer, Samuel L. Jackson’s NPR interview as well as Jesus Candy’s fan song. Enjoy.

Snakes on NPR (HEAVILY UPDATED)

Thursday, March 23rd, 2006

NPR’s All Things Considered ran a segment today on Snakes on a Plane. Go ahead and listen to the MP3 (I thought they would also have a transcript online, but I guess not). They interviewed me this afternoon and I did, in fact, make it into the piece AND I don’t sound totally moronic, which is GREAT. It was very scary.

In addition to me, they had an interview with David Ellis and played clips from Subatomic Warp’s fan song and fan audio trailer… and they even read a few foreign title translations.

NPR also did an interview a few weeks ago with Samuel L. Jackson for those of you who are looking for a little bit more backstory.

How’d I do?

Snakes on Tagworld

Tuesday, March 21st, 2006

I picked up a little bit of information on the Trailer/Non-Trailer and the TagWorld songwriting contest today:

  1. Within the first three days online, the trailer on their site was viewed over 300,000 times. Add to that the 100,000 times it was viewed at the defunct YouTube link and youv’e got a lot of views. Unless it was just me watching it 400,000 times, there’s apparently a lot of interest out there.
  2. They’ve released a new version of their player so that you can embed the video directly into your site… with permission (goodbye lawsuit threats). The code is at the bottom of their site.
  3. Despite my initial misgivings, Tagworld holds that they do indeed have a strong, self-motivated, interest in working to get the winner of the contest into the movie.
  4. Their songwriting contest has already received several hundred submissions. I find it surprising that they’d get so many so quickly, but maybe people are submitting non-Snakes themed songs that they’ve written previously. I hope that when the songs are put up for a vote, the winners will clearly have been written directly for the movie. Again, if you’re submitting songs there I’d love to see them here as well.
