Snakes on a Japanese Trailer
October 2nd, 2006 at 11:22 pm

The Japanese trailer for Snakes on a Plane (or, as they seem to call it, Snake-u Flight-u) is fantastic! Just fantastic. Go check it out at the official Japanese site (local mirror, youtube mirror). The trailer includes classic moments from the film, uses Flight of the Valkyries in a way that the American trailer should have, includes swearing AND has wonderful cross-cultural production values.

Gaijin Biker points out that they translate THE LINE in an odd, yet endearing, manner:

Snakes on a Plane japanese trailer

The Japanese subtitles at the bottom correspond to Samuel’s most famous line from the movie. It’s been rendered as:

    俺様はヘビも飛行機も大嫌いだ!
Oresama wa hebi mo hikoki mo daikirai da!

Which translates to, “I really hate snakes and planes!”

Anybody feel like going through the rest of the trailer and pulling out some choice translation choices?

My daughter is taking Japanese as a junior in high school–I wonder, if I send this trailer to her teacher (who used to be MY English teacher 20 years ago), would he use it in class? Heck, this is the same guy who had us watch “Quadrophenia”! He should be down with it! ;-)

OH sure - there wouldn’t be ANY complaints from parents about the language.

Comment by mother — October 3, 2006 @ 11:03 am

It’s Japanese class, they wouldn’t notice the bad American language.

That was a fantastic trailer, although it sort of blew its load by showing half of the best scenes.

I think they should have translated SLJ’s line as a haiku:

I dislike the snakes
when they are upon a plane
much like mother sex.

In honor of the Japanese release, I think we need some more Snakes on a Plane haikus! Join in everyone!!!

Just watched the whole thing, and maybe you’re right, Mother–but since there’s only 4 kids in the class, and I know one of them has already heard THE LINE, I don’t know if the other 3 would have a problem or not (I know the teacher may not, but he may get in trouble with the school)?

Anyway, as awesome as it was, it does give away too many of the good surprises of the movie. I mean, what fun is it to hate that British guy, if you know beforehand he’s gonna buy it anaconda-style? Shame, really. ;-)

that has to be the greatest trailer ive ever seen!!!

Here is my attempt at translation:

Huge American hit
Opened at No. 1!

To kill someone in a plane at 30,000 feet…
These terrorists are not using guns or explosives. Instead, they will release the ultimate assassins.

The largest snake crisis in the history of cinema.

Thousands of…
Poisonous snakes!

Will the plane crash?
Will they get bitten?

Top: Samuel L Jackson
Bottom: Snake Flight (sneeku furaito)

Total Panic!
You will not be able to sit. (Or: You will be on the edge of your seat.)

Opps, some of that got cut out:

[Opening]
Huge American hit
Opened at No. 1!

[Male narrator]
To kill someone in a plane at 30,000 feet…
These terrorists are not using guns or explosives. Instead, they will release the ultimate assassins.

[Start of Flight of the Valkyries music]
The largest snake crisis in the history of cinema.

[After "We have to put a barrier between us and the snakes"]
Thousands of…
Poisonous snakes!

[After "1-2-1 pull heavy, pull up"]
Will the plane crash?
Will they get bitten?

[Snake flight logo]
Top: Samuel L Jackson
Bottom: Snake Flight (sneeku furaito)

Total Panic!
You will not be able to sit. (Or: You will be on the edge of your seat.)

“Dies irae” from Verdi’s Requiem might have been a good choice, too.

*snickers uncontrollably*

Or Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer”?

Great trailer, though it does give away too much. Hysterical, and really gets the feel of the movie.

You know, the line itself is a mere syllable too long for haiku:

I have had it with (5)
these m*therf*cking snakes on (7)
this m*therf*cking plane (6)

But here are my additions:

Snakes on a plane? What?
This is not what Jules wanted
when he retired.

I love the title.
I love the blog-started lines.
M*therf*cking snakes!

M*therf*cking snakes
on my plane! Nothing gets lost
in the translation.

Snakes are on planes now!
Suddenly, the world seems like
Such a better place!

Comment by Armitage112 — October 5, 2006 @ 12:45 pm

that is the best translation yet! I love it! it sounds so low key.
