Snakes on a DVD Release
September 26th, 2006 at 6:40 pm

A few weeks ago I had a little mini battle with New Line’s legal department over the upcoming DVD release. The short version of it was that they wanted Disney to sue me. It would have been, I imagine, a very short lawsuit. Anyway, due to that back and forth I know they were working on a segment for the DVD called, ironically enough, Snakes on a Blog which told the story of the online phenom by way of interviews with a number notable/recognizable people in the online community.

Anyway, after checking around a little bit, I found a little bit more information about what’s being planned for the DVD. Here’s the mini-list that I have unofficially ferreted out:

    • Deleted scenes
    • Documentaries
    • A ‘gag’ reel
    • Trailers
    • TV spots
    • Commentaries
    • Easter eggs?

Commentaries could be great. It would have been neat to see a version of the film as it would have appeared had New Line not agreed to bump the film from a PG-13 to an R. Sort of a here’s-what-you-would-have-gotten-if-people-hadn’t-demanded-an-R-rating version. It would have been interesting.

Why’d you mention the lawsuit?

Probably because I don’t have an editor to cut out the extraneous material when I’m composing a post.

In reality, I mention it because I was actually rather annoyed at the way that the New Line DVD legal team handled that particular situation. They did not approach me in as honest a manner as I would have hoped/expected. It sticks in my mind, so it was pretty much bound to pop up at some point.

Does that mean there won’t be a special feature about us fans?

Why did they want to sue you?

Gotta love the Legal Department.

As to the question about fans, I’m sure they’ll have a section on us, but the true question is, how many people will be in it?

There are fans in the “snakes on a blog” segment. Myself, DC Lugi, Brian from SnakesonStuff.com, Jeff Rowland and a few others. Oh, Reba Mac is in there a little bit.

Did anyone else get contacted by that guy who said he was from New Line and wanted to use stuff we posted here for the DVD? He wanted to use the picture I sent Brian of the snake made of cans, and I had to tell him I didn’t make it, and he was like, send me the stuff you DID make, and I did. and I don’t know if any of it will be used, but he sent me all these forms to sign off on them with, so I’m guessing it’s legit?? Not that I expect to see myself on a DVD, mind you, but it would be kinda cool?

I’m pretty sure I sent it to him…I hope I did…I thought

I know that the Disney angle comes because people think that the cartoon snake in the “Snakes on a Blog” logo at the top of the site, looks like the Disney snake characters Kaa in Disney’s Jungle Book and Sir Hiss in Disney’s Robin Hood.

Apparently New Line had been planning to put a shot of the front page of snakesonablog.com on their site, but then became concerned that Disney would sue them for an apparent use of their snake character art.

Beyond that I’m speculating… maybe New Line tried to force Brian to change the logo of the site to avoid all this. Maybe he refused, and maybe they actually tried to probe Disney to see if they considered the logo a copyright violation or not. Maybe they actually asked Disney to sue Brian. For New Line, that would have been a smart move: if Disney forced him to change it, then New Line could use the new site logo and not worry about getting sued; but if Disney didn’t treat it as a copyright violation, that meant that they almost certainly wouldn’t sue New Line for the logo appearing on their DVD.

It’s also possible that Brian trademarked the phrase “Snakes on a Blog”, or that New Line wanted to trademark the phrase “Snakes on a Blog”; so they were trying to legally pressure Brian in some way to get control of the name. This seems unlikely to me though.

Again, those last two paragraphs are completely speculation on my part.

Jakob is on the special features also.

Disney is evil. Ever since Michael Eisner had his predesessor killed in that plane crash so he could take over the company and push his own brand of filth.

Comment by Snakes in Europe — September 27, 2006 @ 6:00 pm

Of course, the above staement is MY opinion and mine alone and is perfectly legal as it is speculation.

I mean its not like I said something like Michael Eisner has a history in his hometown of Mt Kisco, NY, of pedophillia tendencies.

Comment by Snakes in Europe — September 27, 2006 @ 6:02 pm

Ha, just because something is “opinion” and “speculation” doesn’t make it “legal.” On the other hand, thanks to the CDA, I, as an Internet Service Provider, am totally in the legal clear regardless of what outlandish assertions you may make. Phew.

Comment by Snakes on a Blog — September 27, 2006 @ 6:07 pm

Outlandish? Sir, i never make outlandish statements such as Michael Eisner is a cross dresser or Steven Spielberg butt-raped Harrison Ford on the Indiana Jones set or David Geffen flies in underage boys for a sexual orgy he calls “Circle of fire”. I would never make such outlandish statements as such and even if i did, they would be pure speculation and as such, cannot be considered fact.

So..uh…there…ya.

The DVD company asked me for permission to use our movie “Snakes on a Home Birth”, which I granted. We sent all the release forms…even one for the baby. Haven’t heard anything since!

Comment by Matt Barr — September 28, 2006 @ 10:07 pm

Snakes in Europe, you need to be really, REALLY careful about making unfounded allegations about the Disney corporation. They don’t take things like that lightly. In fact, just last year, a person made some public criticisms of Michael Eisner, and he hired a group of gay male bikers to gangbang that person!

That person’s anus has never quite recovered and, in fact, I still have to apply lube to it every night.

Comment by IQpierce — September 29, 2006 @ 4:49 pm

“HE has to apply lube to it every night” is what I meant to say. Can I go back and edit that?

Comment by IQpierce — September 29, 2006 @ 4:49 pm

That snake looks nothing like the ones in question, certainly not enough to be called a straight out copy.

This should not be the major concern, regarding lawsuits and all that…

WHY IS THE DVD BEING DELAYED UNTIL AFTER CHRISTMAS?!?!

DAMN YOU NEW LINE CINEMA! I want my (bleeping) SNAKES in my (bleeping) CHRISTMAS STOCKING!

We should sue to have an earlier release date!!!
