Snakes on an Assignment

This has been sitting in my inbox for a long time, but here’s an essay assignment that was handed out at a college this spring:

Media Industries
Essay #2

3 – 5 page Paper in my Mailbox, and in my email INBOX by Friday April 28th

Please write a 3-5-page paper answering one of the following questions. Please support you ideas with research from the textbook and other sources. Remember to properly cite all reference material. Answer one of the following:

1. We have covered the production and marketing techniques employed by the motion picture industry but every now and then a new situation arises that changes the way things are traditionally done. There is a Movie that is currently in Post-production called “Snakes on a Plane” that has generated so much buzz that it has actually altered the final product (dialogue has been added due to “audience pressure”, and remember that this film has not even come out yet). This was only possible through the use of new technologies; particularly blogs and video blogs  (such as YouTube.com), which have created a new publicity landscape that, could become a template for future Motion Picture productions. Research the film and the related audience created content. Comment on what this means for the future of the Motion Picture industry.

2. Advertising and PR compliment each other. At times, the industries have struggled to remain separate and distinct but in the last five to six years, agencies have increasingly tried to coordinate the two activities to exploit the benefits of both. This has been called Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC). Find recent examples of IMC campaigns and how they have succeeded or failed in their goals. How will this affect the future of the Ad/PR industries (more integration and synergy, more conglomeration?)? Examples can be found in the textbook, but there are many more details available from other sources

Anyone want to take a stab at it?

I love how people were SCARED that this movie was going to “change Hollywood.” Like it could get any worse, or something.

Luckily for them, Snakes wasn’t the runaway smash people thought it would be. This tremor will no longer keep them up at night.

Actually, I disagree, Jim. Not really being in marketing or even anything remotely similar to a field (yay tech support) but I do have .02$.

Yes I do notice that there was NOT a damn cent really made FOR the movie. But at the same time there was a new thing coming out of it. The fact that people could spread their own ideas, that hey myabe collectively there could be something good from this. Who knows how this will affect the future of advertising (maybe hit spots on youtube and things like that) or even what if anything can come of this.

I think conversely, that something will come of this in the end. Changing hollywood? That monster hasn’t changed in 120 years or so. People have already moved onto the next fad, whatever that is (I have yet to discover it). What I think changed was our perceptions of the internet, as a real, viable thing now, not just a thing to watch.

To answer question number two, I haven’t a clue what the differences are and I don’t have the text book. I think the only reason why the movie kind of sank low after the first turn was the lack of PR or even advertising on the part of Newline. Really. I live in Columbus, Ohio and about all I saw was only two advertisments the entire wait of the movie. They relied too heavily on the media of the internet to convey to the masses of people sans internet (almost too impossible to think of in this day and age). I knew of several people who hadn’t heard of SOAP after the movie came out. If they wanted a larger audience they shouldn’t have really ignored the actual normal modes of advertising, radio spots, and things like that, like a normal movie spot would have.

Again just my .02$
