Snakes on a Presidential Candidate

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

Bullz-Eye interviewed David Ellis a week ago and he was kind enough to give the following quote:

BE: How much do you love Brian F.? (Note: Brian F. runs the fan favorite snakesonablog.com.)

DE: He’s awesome. The guy should be president. He’s frickin’ amazing. I got to meet him at Comic-Con, and I started a dialogue with him very early on, on the site.

I hereby announce that I am seeking the SoaP party’s nomination for President. The sad part is that I might actually have some real competition in the primaries.

MSNBC has put together a Snakes on a Plane quiz.

How’d you do?

Snakes on a Plane on a Plane

Tuesday, August 15th, 2006

My mom saw one of these a few days in Connecticut. They’ve also been spotted in Boston and a number of other places around the country. Snakes on a Plane on (or behind) a Plane:

Snakes on a Plane

I like how much bigger the banner is than the tiny plane that’s dragging it. They should have hired Monty Coles to fly these banners around.

Also, as the movie draws ever nearer, the media attention is increasing along with my hit counts.  That’s going to lead to the website occasionally giving a temporary error message or not properly displaying all the images on the page.  Simply reloading should resolve these issues.  Slow loading times I can’t do much about.

Snakes on a Song

Tuesday, August 15th, 2006

Foolishly I’ve been holding on to a long collection of songs for months and now I’ve lost a lot of their names and contact information. Sadly, I no longer have the time to research where each of these came from, so I’m just going to throw them out there to you. Give them a try, and if you know who belongs to each song (and links to their websites), post it in the comments:

Anyone want to review these?

Update: One more from WPLJ in New York:

Snakes on CNBC

Tuesday, August 15th, 2006

CNBC is here filming over my shoulder right now. They’ve asked me to type. It’s not very interesting to read this message, but hey, what else do I have to do right now?

I’m also doing an interview with NBC’s Today Show tomorrow morning. I guess both of these will be airing sometime during the week. I’ll get more information when I’m not just typing to fill time.

Ok, the CNBC interview is going to air during a piece on On The Money tomorrow (8/16) at 7:00pm EST.

UPDATE: CBS just wrote in to say they were going to air my LONG delayed piece on the CBS Evening News on Thursday night.

Snakes on a Demolition Derby Video

Monday, August 14th, 2006

A few days I posted pictures of Snakes on a Car which was about to compete in a Demolition Derby. Today we’ve got video of said derby:

Snakes on Skins

Monday, August 14th, 2006

There are two different snake-skin products that have been filling my inbox lately. The first is the Snakes on a Plane iPod “skin” which has been on sale for a while now. I don’t have an iPod, so when I was sent one I stuck it on a friend’s:

The second is snakeskin bound books, for sale at AbesBooks, including this $17,000 masterpiece:

Snakes on a British Rating

Monday, August 14th, 2006

Snakes on a Plane has been rated 15 by the BBFC (the British version of the MPAA):

Snakes on a Plane is rated 15 for “strong language, sex and bloody violence”. A 15 rating over here is roughly equivalent to most of R-rated films these days.

Also the above linked site mentions that the British version of the film weighed in at 105 minutes, 13 seconds. Does somebody want to calculate the SPMs (Snakes per Minute) of this movie?

Snakes on a Cult

Monday, August 14th, 2006

Is Snakes on a Plane an internet cult?

Undoubtedly the greatest internet phenomenon to grace the world, Snakes on a Plane is our salvation, our hope. The Cultivators of SoaP are dedicated to the promulgation of this fact, and the re-education of humankind.

Samuel L. Jackson was the first Cultivator of SoaP. When presented with the first Book of Truth (the original movie script), he was blinded my the title alone: “Snakes on a Plane.” He needed no further evidence to begin his spiritual journey into the best leading role he would ever fufill. He has been the driving force behind the essence of SoaP, and it is to him that we owe much of our gratitude for enlightening the first among us.

Snakes on eBay

Monday, August 14th, 2006

I haven’t generally linked to eBay items for a variety of reasons, but one today caught my eye, Snakes on a Plane toast.

ba_1.JPG

Sure, you may already own Virgin Mary toast or Hello Kitty toast, but nothing compares to Snakes on a Plane toast.

Also, while we’re on eBay, a charity is auctioning off the black and white shirt that Samuel L. Jackson wore during the film.  It’s too bad it’s just a generic shirt, items of clothing worn by stars in films are a lot more interesting when they’re exotic or at least recognizable.

Snakes on Official Video Clips

Monday, August 14th, 2006

New Line solicited remixed versions of their commercials/trailers from Addictive TV, who are in to that sort of thing. It’s airing on MTV, but here’s a version for your own personal internet:

Addictive TV commercial remix

IGN has posted a lot of videos regarding the film, including a bunch of new clips that went live on August 7th as well as a lot of stuff from Comic-Con.

Also, G4 sent me a promo clip for Snakes on a Plane week, (which I may have missed already, sorry about being so slow) with interviews with Samuel L. Jackson, David Ellis, and some other stuff.

Snakes on a Comics XIX

Sunday, August 13th, 2006
I’ve been holding on to these comics for so long that I’ve lost their source info. If anbody knows where these came from, please post in the comments so I can attribute them correctly:

edjone0811.jpg.jpg Nothing_to_do_by_SANE_INTOLERANT.jpg

Ok, we’ve had some people chime in.  The first comic was written by Matt Simpson (Nuclear Powered Toaster) and Eric Nault (Hellbound Comic), the second was from Savage Chicken, the third was an editorial from the Free Lance Star.  The fourth one is still a mystery to me.

Snakes on a Blog IX

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

Welcome to the FINAL monthly stats update. I’m a day late in posting this, I’m sure I’m going to hear about it from my dad.

I’ve been online for around 215 days. I’ve had over 915,000 visitors (I might hit a million before the premiere). I’ve posted 446 stories which received 4,288 comments (and 4,187 blocked spam comments). There have been 3,000,000 requests for pages, and a staggering 47,000,000 requests for all files (these are mostly people hotlinking to images, comics, and icons and posting them on other forums around the net). I’ve transferred 1.29 terabytes of data. The most popular day of the week is still Friday. The most popular hour of the day is still between 1pm and 2pm EST.

I’ve gotten twenty free t-shirts, one free hat, one free button and one free mug. A fan started petition requesting I be allowed to attend the premiere is over 1720 signatures. There are currently 55 translations of “Snakes on a Plane” into foreign languages and well over 100 poems. I’ve been interviewed by three TV crews. SnakesOnABlog.com has appeared in countless of newspaper stories, linked to by thousands of blogs, and over 6,000 other webpages. I’ve been invited to one Comic-Con.

But my goal was not to build stats. My goal was not to get free t-shirts or high hit-counts. My goal was to attend the Hollywood premiere of Snakes on a Plane. Finally, thanks to all of the above stats and the help of hundreds of thousands of readers, I was officially invited to attend.

Thank you, everybody.

Previous stats updates: first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth.

Snakes on an IMDB Poll

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

Snakes on a Plane trounced all other competition as the most anticipated August release on IMDB.

Snakes on an Audio Book

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

An audio book of Snakes on a Plane is available for download, but it’s not free AND it’s chock full of DRM.  If you don’t mind paying and don’t mind subjecting your purchases to the whims of rights-holders, you can give it a shot. Once again, I was asked to accept a “security update” before I was allowed to listen to this, so I wasn’t particularly interested. You might be.

The audiobook apparently cast both DCLugi and the guys from Subatomic Warp to provide audio.  Does anybody care to provide a review?

Snakes on a Mafia Game

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

Critical Hits updated the classroom game of Mafia/Assassin for Snakes on a Plane:

Every round, the snakes will bite someone, and the Snake will learn the truth about one player. The Captain tells everyone to close their eyes. Everyone makes noise (with one hand only!) to simulate the turbulence and sounds of flying. After that, the Captain tells the Snakes to open their eyes. They must come to a consensus about which passenger they will bite. Once they have picked someone, the Captain notes who was picked, and tells the Snakes to close their eyes…

I guess this could be played while waiting in line on Thursday night?

Snakes on CafePress/New Line Quasi-Official Shirts

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

New Line has taken an interesting tack with the whole t-shirt phenomenom. It might be a little bit late in the game to make a difference, but when go to the Cafe Press Snakes on a Plane page, you find this:

Creating a unique program in the true ‘citizen’ spirit of Snakes on a Plane, New Line and CafePress have partnered to permit fans of the movie to become official licensees of Snakes on a Plane merchandise. This interactive promotion allows our network of over 2.5 million members to unleash their creativity to transform Snakes on a Plane artwork and ideas into unique gifts and share in the revenue stream. This completely unique approach to fan licensing, has never previously been embraced by any motion picture studio.

The one catch is:

Any content in the Snakes on a Plane Portal is subject to removal at the discretion of New Line Productions, Inc. and/or CafePress.com. You may not use any (1) copyrighted images or content created by New Line Cinema (e.g. images from the film); or (2) images/depictions of the individual actors in the film. All content must comply with the CafePress.com Content Usage Policy and be used in accordance with the CafePress.com Shopkeeper Agreement.

So, no pictures of Samuel L. Jackson. That’s mildly annoying. Oh well, there’s still a lot of leeway there. I wonder if New Line (or other studios) are going to keep doing this sort of thing in the future. Will the next generation of films even bother making their own merchandise, or just allow fans to do it for them?
