Snakes on an IMDB Rating
August 26th, 2006 at 12:43 am

Snakes on a Plane is currently rated 8.0 (with over 16,000 votes) at IMDB.  The interesting thing about this is that an 8.0 puts Snakes on a Plane in the top 200 films of all time.  Here’s a short list of films of a few of the films currently ranked lower than Snakes on a Plane:

  • Gone With the Wind
  • A Christmas Story
  • Spartacus
  • The Grapes of Wrath
  • The Big Lebowski
  • 12 Monkeys
  • In the Heat of the Night
  • Inherit the Wind
  • Bonny and Clyde
  • Scarface
  • A Streetcar Named Desire
  • Planet of the Apes

Now, everybody should know that the IMDB rankings are A) strange and B) erratic during the early days of release, so don’t expect these numbers to stay this high.  It just seemed interesting.

I have no intention of ever seeing Snakes on a Plane, but it goes without saying that the same people who went to see this movie and gave it high marks on IMDB are the same people who send money to spammers. Keeps the universe in balance I guess.

Hey there,

Brian at Film School Rejects was talking about this the other day. His thought is that this is another residual of the online cult status of the film… Almost as if everyone who was part of all the buzz is doing it on purpose to prove a point…

Check out the story here: http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/news/movie-buzz/snakes-on-a-plane-might-be-oscar-worthy-say-imdb-users.php

I gave the movie a 9!

Interesting related post over att the Freakonomics blog about strange anomalies in some movies ratings, including Snakes on a Plane. It seems somebody may have been cheating…

Cheers

[...] Not nice to cheat… An IMDB watchman, Economist Cyril Morong, thought he saw anomalies in the ratings some movies were getting (including the much hyped Snakes on a Plane) and submitted the data to the guardians of statistics over at the Freakonomics camp who agreed. Brian’s famous fansite have noted the high ratings as well. Well done boys! [...]

Unfortunately, right now it is only elgible for the top 200. It needs far more ratings, at relatively the same amount (7.5 or higher), to be put on the top 200 list. So people need to keep voting for it on IMDb!!! (high votes)

I posted some comments over at Freakonomics in response to other comments. What I have below is something I tried to post but does not seem to be appearing.

I found out how much each movie had earned at the box office then divided that by the number of votes it had gotten at IMDB. “Snakes” by far had the lowest rate. My guess is that it means that the people who saw it felt very intensely about it or people voted who did not see it. Maybe this does not mean anything, but it seems interesting. Here are the dollar per vote totals

Barnyard $129,386
Ice Age $78,220
Over the Hedge $56,816
Cars $42,329
Step Up $36,369
The Devil Wears Prada $29,416
Click $28,528
Invincible $27,712
Accepted $21,431
Talladega Nights $21,345
Pirates of the Caribbean $19,993
Mission: Impossible $17,127
Da Vinci Code $16,976
World Trade Center $16,970
Idlewild $16,435
Xmen $14,102
Superman Returns $10,113
Beerfest $7,767
Little Miss Sunshine $4,833
Snakes on a Plane $2,149

I used “The Numbers” site to get the dollar amount, as of yesterday. This could be a little bit of a problem since I took the number of votes from today. As soon as “The Numbers” posts data through today, I will do this again. Also, I only used US data for both votes and dollar amounts.
