Snakes at Snakes on a Plane
August 23rd, 2006 at 12:57 pm

It seems that I wasn’t the only person to get in for free to a screening of Snakes on a Plane; someone in Arizona thought it would be funny to release two venomous rattlesnakes during the film. Bring on the experts:

“That to me is very scary,” herpetological association representative Tom Whiting said. “I would hate to be watching a movie about snakes and have a rattlesnake bite me.”

Presumably it wouldn’t be scary at all to be bitten by a rattlesnake during, say, Titanic.

When I heard this, I came up with a list of movies that could never pull that off:

Cars
Pirates of the Caribbean
Bats
Night of the Living Dead

Oh, I could get a bat into a theater. No problem.

And Pirates? I saw a bunch of pirates at my screening of Pirates of the Caribbean II, although they may not have been REAL pirates.

Perhaps Lemmy is referring to releasing The Caribbean into the theater….

Ah, now I admit that would be trickier. Although, with the right theater location, not impossible.

I saw that, and I must say that was pretty irresponsible…not even so much to the people but the snakes. Snakes should only be our playthings in movies, not life.

Wow. I just saw that there was an organized effort to tell people to bring rubber snakes to the premiere. I just thought I was being clever when I did it this past weekend. I guess I am not as original as I thought.

But real snakes? Yowza.

That would be why my legs have been folded indian style in the seat during every showing and I’ve sat at the back of the theater.

Wow! That’s actually pretty extreme, in my opinion.

When I first saw this, my immediate thought was: HILARIOUS! But then, I was like, hmmmm, BABY Diamondback rattlesnakes? Dangerous!

Although, if they gathered some garter snakes and let THOSE loose, my thought again would be: HILARIOUS!

I thought it was fairly inconsiderate, really… yeah, by all means release venomous snakes into a cinema. But please, not ones that are gonna make a noise while I’m trying to watch a movie, goddammit.

I knew someone who worked at this theatre.

[...] I just hate it when the truth has to go ahead and find a way to ruin a perfectly good (and believable) urban legend: Phoenix, Arizona police have denied reports live rattlesnakes were released in a cinema during a screening of Snakes On A Plane, insisting the claims are a hoax. Local news reports on Tuesday said cinema-goers were terrified when two live venomous rattlesnakes were released at a showing of the Samuel L. Jackson film last Friday. Phoenix police sergeant Joel Tranter admits there is a shred of truth to the story - a 10-inch rattlesnake was found on Friday in a hallway at the movie theatre, but is thought to have slithered there on its own. A security guard swept the snake up outside and trapped it in a plastic container until a member of the Arizona Herpetological Association could haul it away. Snake handlers had also been called to the theatre earlier in the day to retrieve another rattlesnake from outside. [...]
