August 19th, 2006 at 7:59 pm

First Box Office reports are in for Friday:

  1. Snakes on a Plane - $6,130,000
  2. Talladega Nights - $4,130,000
  3. Accepted - $3,605,000
  4. Step Up - $3,500,000

Snakes also made $1,400,000 on Thursday, which is not accounted for in the number above.

Unrelated: did anybody tape my appearance on the Today Show or CNBC? I’d like to see them.

Loved Ricky Bobby! Loved Snakes better! “With extra camp!”

Looks like the reports of sparsely filled theatres were right.. Maybe repeat business/word of mouth will help. DVD will surely make a profit, but it would have been a nice flex of our motherfucking powers to get it to 25-30M.

Comment by powlsy — August 19, 2006 @ 8:09 pm

That seems a bit low. If true, including the Thursday show, you’re looking at a total gross of ~$28M for the weekend. I’m betting it’s closer to $35M.

“NOTE: If daily grosses stop for a movie, it means that the respective studio is no longer tracking it on a daily basis. The exceptions are New Line, Miramax/Dimension and Sony Pictures Classics. They don’t do official daily box office, and estimates are made for their movies based on partial data in order to fill out the top 12. Because of this, movies from these studios are more apt to disappear from the daily chart.”

I think it’s worth waiting for New Line’s figures. While 6 million isn’t bad for an R-rated movie, I think it did better.

Going to see the snakes on monday here in the UK! I feel like i should join this frenzy, give a message out to all the million dollar PR firms … at this specific moment in time, you’re worthless! And you’ll never be able to repeat this! Brilliant … that as mass consumers we still do have some power left … it doesn’t show often … but it did now! So that’s why i’m going to see it! … And hey .. Snakes on a Plane!!!

How much did it cost to make it?

Comment by AnyankaBunnyfear — August 19, 2006 @ 8:39 pm

It probably only cost about $25.

As to how much SoaP cost, the IMDb estimates at $35 million, and I’ve read elsewhere (can’t recall where though) a figure of $30M. So, with world-wide figues, my guess is it will recoup it’s costs sometime early next week!
(I’m seeing it Sunday in London, UK).

This footage from the premiere of “Snakes” is pretty damned funny. The description isn’t kidding when it says the reporter Woody Wittman is “clueless.” But when he gets Sam to say “I’m tired of these gosh darn snakes,” it’s fantastic.

Glad that Snake’s doing well at the box-office. The film deserves it. Also, a pretty funny video there. Thanks for posting that, “Evan”.

It’s opening is less than I woulda hoped. But with a budget of only $30 million it’ll be a huge success. It’ll pass 30 million by next weekend and make a killing on DVD in November, or whenever. I’m betting they’ll rush the DVD out to cash in on the hype.

Brian,
On the CNBC Interview, I have it recorded on tivo. I have not transfered it to my computer. I have to get the right kind of USB cable. It is on CNBC Video Online But everyway I try to download the video fails. If anyone that has it now or can take it and put it on youtube. They had a close-up of Jakob at the end of the segment. It was a great interview. Good going Brain and Congrats again. I will post a link to the comments.

Way Better Than Expected!!!
“This movie created so much hype over the internet and it absolutely lived up to it! In fact it turned out to be a very well made movie, better than I expected. I’m sure most that see it will agree. If you think it sounds cheesy, please dont let that stop you from seeing it, you’ll be glad you did. Big high five to the cast and crew! Great Job!”

Comment by Ceaser — August 20, 2006 @ 2:56 am

On Yahoo News, they’re saying it made “only $15 million” and essentially didn’t live up to expectations, profit-wise. :-p

Comment by Ann — August 20, 2006 @ 3:07 pm

According to rentrak snakes is in 2nd total gross 4,264,670

Brian,
I saw the CNBC interview on the MSNBC website. It was one of the “critic’s picks”.
I have the Today show here. Want to stop by? :-)

Good work internet. As of now, we’ve beaten out the 9/11 exploitation movie and the crappy college flick.

Comment by Lars — August 20, 2006 @ 6:39 pm

I (finally) saw SoaP at a 17:20 showing in London’s West End (the premier place to see…er…premier films) and I’m afraid to say that the cinema was 3/4 empty. However, on a more positive note, this wasn’t the most popular time slot and, given that it IS actually a damn fine film, I’m hoping that word-of-moth will encourage others to watch the movie after the internet fans have seen it.

BTW it WAS worth the (rather long) wait.

Comment by alan1957 — August 20, 2006 @ 6:48 pm

erhmm, that’s word-of-mouth rather than word-of-moth…
word-of-moth would be kinda *herhuphmmm*!

sorry…given my terrible snake phobia i had many bottles of very strong cider before and apres the showing…

Comment by alan1957 — August 20, 2006 @ 6:51 pm

I’m stunned that the numbers being reported for the weekend are so low, especially given all the “free” publicity on the airwaves lately. Really strange.

I didn’t expect Titanic-like numbers, but it’s odd that it didn’t break $20M, given the generally positive reviews (from critics and fans) and the fact that most people who saw it raved about it and would recommend it to their friends. Was there something else going on this weekend that I didn’t know about?

Comment by Squibner — August 20, 2006 @ 8:14 pm

Right now Box Office Mojo has SoaP at 13.9 Million for Friday-Sunday, and sadly Talladega Nights beat Sam with 14.1 million. With word of mouth and repeat business, I think we will get them next week!! “Do what I say and You will Live!”

Comment by TallTIki — August 21, 2006 @ 12:24 am

First official numbers, from The New York Times: $15.2 million–that includes Thursday night. :-(

I officially hate everyone who thinks these numbers are bad.
