Yeah, I agree that the NYTimes review wasn’t negative, it seemed like Manohla liked it pretty well, for what it was, which was awesome :)

I just love the pic on the CNN review. Snake? Uh? Arrrrrrgggghhhh!

That’s a good solid review for the NY TIMES.

Comment by TB — August 18, 2006 @ 1:35 pm

For Manohla Dargis to like a movie, it must be pretty awesome. She doesn’t like ANYTHING.

Comment by Kat — August 18, 2006 @ 1:38 pm

“In other words it’s “United 93” without the tears”

that’s the best line out of the NY Times review.

The NYT review that is linked in your post was written by MANOHLA DARGIS and it is defiantly a positive one. He calls it an “amusingly crude, honestly satisfying artifact”.

Comment by spavis — August 18, 2006 @ 2:56 pm

I saw SNAKES ON A PLANE last night in Harrisonburg, Va (special showing, bitches). The only word I can use to describe that movie is snake-tastic.
“FUCKING SNAKE GET OFF MY DICK!”
The theater was full of energy….not so much of people. I think there were maybe twenty other snake fans there, including my friends. Every time something amazing would happen, which was pretty often, we’d errupt in cheers of “YEAH SNAKES ON A PLANE!”, and when Samuel L. Jackson said his infamous line “that’s it! i’ve had it with these mother fucking snakes on this mother fucking plane!”, I think I cried a little from sheer joy.
I give this cinematic experiance five out of five stars. It has everything; surf scenes, boobies, sheer terror (yes, i jumped a few times), romance, hilarity, heel-in-neck action, baseball bats of doom, red bull product placement, sterotypical black guys, OCD black guys and a pissed off British guy.
My expectations were set pretty low….but this was actually a pretty good movie…no lie.
“Who’s your daddy now, bitch?!”
If you see one movie about snakes on a plane in your lifetime, make it “Snakes on a Plane.” You won’t be disappointed, I promise.

Comment by Sarah — August 18, 2006 @ 3:12 pm

lol, that’s one of the best reviews I’ve ever seen from the NYTimes!

I have a review of Roeper’s review of Snakes on a Plane:

Comment by IQpierce — August 18, 2006 @ 3:21 pm

“one of the loudest cheers in the theater down here in Florida was when the plane comes within 20 feet of crashing in the ocean only to swoop upward at the last minute.”

OMG I forgot that one too!!! Yeah people went **crazy** when that happened!!! Everyone was screaming “Sam, you’re the man!” and “My hero!!”

Comment by Tom — August 18, 2006 @ 3:37 pm

Its funny, how a critic can say it wasnt what fans hoped for, when all i hear from the fans is how great it is. what losers to think thier opinions are everyone elses

Comment by riz — August 18, 2006 @ 3:40 pm

At the risk of being a self-promoting blowhard…

Four stars out of five.

One question, though is it just me, or did iPod Girl disappear after her one scene? I don’t remember her living or dying. Anyone?

Comment by David Medsker — August 18, 2006 @ 4:19 pm

I’m sorry, I heard that this movie was made with fans suggestions and that. Can someone tell me please where can I send future suggestions for upcoming movies? I would appreciate an answer. God job with the movie.

My local paper gave it a bad review. This isn’t shocking. They also gave

Sin City D
The 40 Year old Virgin C
American Beauty C
Lord of the Rings:Return of the King C

So ya know Snakes on a Plane with a C is in pretty good company

Comment by Snakes on a Snake — August 18, 2006 @ 9:14 pm

I saw the 10pm show 8/7, and struggled to find the right words to describe it. Luckily, my wise and kindhearted cousin had already posted the right words:

triumph in the face of motherfucking adversity
Current mood: snakes

tonight i was touched. not by an angel, not by the myriad gophone customers from my store i note appear on the megan’s law website, not even by my own hairy hand. no, tonight…tonight i was awed…by the power of one man’s struggle against nigh impossible odds. the one man i’d ever want watching my back when i’m at the brink…your friend, and mine. that’s right. samuel l. jackson. tonight he not only saved the life of one important on-screen witness, but an entire theater of rabid moviegoers. we weren’t there to experience the next brokeback mountain (i have yet to experience the first), we weren’t there to see the future of digital filmmaking. no, this group, from varying ages (mostly 20s) and racial backgrounds (mostly white) came together as one, with a singular purpose:

to see samuel l. jackson get these motherfucking snakes off that motherfucking plane.

…and in the process to tazer, kick, shoot, and various other things i won’t mention them into mighty, unadulterated submission. i don’t need to tell you that the movie is the greatest thing made by humans. you know this. what i need to tell you is that the sense of camaraderie felt among the disparate peoples in this theater, the sheer joy felt among all involved as sam fucking jackson screams obscenities while tazering snakes in the face…it felt like rebirth, like i had rediscovered my fellow man and how screaming random obnoxious shit in someone you don’t know’s face can represent the bonds of brotherhood. nevermind the fact that during the entire spectacle some intrepid groups in the back rows saw fit to pelt the crowd with rubber snakes…the sheer geek euphoria at every new cliche, every ridiculous call to arms…it didn’t matter that everything we saw on screen at any given moment was absolute bollocks. tonight i felt the awesome might of film, it’s ability to join people together in harmony as they scream excitedly at people that can’t hear them. tonight i felt the power of that which al gore so lovingly unleashed upon the world, how the internet could turn a shit movie with no discernable plot into a shit movie with no discernable plot that kicks all kinds of foreign ass. and most importantly, tonight i realized that life isn’t about tackling the big issues. it’s about getting together a group of your closest family and friends, grabbing some popcorn, and enjoying seeing a woman get bit by a cobra in the tit.

life is good.

For Immediate Release - Dateline Hollywood:

Did you see the movie “Snakes on a Plane?” I can’t wait for the sequel to come out, “Dogs on a Train.” It’s about a train full of rabid Pit Bulls that break out of their crates while some negligent keeper was feeding them. The train can’t be stopped, because it is an Amtrak Express and their track record for late arrivals has been ridiculed recently in the press. Management refused to stop the train. Once the mayhem ensues, the hero keeps the dogs from tearing the passengers apart by launching milk bones from a slingshot. He is quickly devoured by the dogs and we really never find out who he was. The government has the best solution. They set up a Gatling gun at the side of the tracks and shoot tranquilizer darts through the side of the train. The story comes to a tragic end when an oncoming train is diverted onto the same track named “Frogs on a Freight.”

Comment by John Wolf — August 18, 2006 @ 10:55 pm

I saw it tonight (yeah, I’m posting again) as opposed to last night. There were loads of teenagers in the theater. When Sam said his famous line, people not only cheered, they stood up and cheered. It was…emotional. :-) Snakes on crack! Ha ha.

My local paper has a set of blogs, and in one, a guy found himself a real herpetologist and asked him what parts were unrealistic. That’d be…98%, I think. ;-) But he acknowledged that most people would understand that it was all creative license and not believe that any of that is actually possible. But…you SO shouldn’t suck venom out by mouth…man.

Man, that was one funny movie. Awesome. It delivered what it promised–snakes on a plane.

Comment by Ann — August 19, 2006 @ 1:44 am

Having seen this movie I take back every negative thought I’ve evern held towards “Hollywood”. Now all I got to do is figure out how Samual L Jackson can play Holden Caulfield battling snakes (and phonies) in a prep school…

Comment by J.D. Salinger — August 19, 2006 @ 3:14 am

Aye dudes,

I live in Venezuela so I haven’t seen it, but I wanted to say that the whole reaction to the movie has made my year. I really enjoyed reading the reviews and all of your opinions.

I specially love this line by the Philly guy who didn’t like the movie:

(the crowd) cheered enthusiastically when Jackson delivered the tagline already made famous on the internet, “Enough is enough. I have had it with the snakes on this plane!”

I mean, fuck.

Comment by Ortega — August 19, 2006 @ 6:28 am

By the way, Chris, about those people at the back of the theatre throwing rubber snakes, I know at the theatre where I work we got FedEx’d a box of rubber snakes and we were allowed to do whatever we wanted with em. Origionally the plan was to actually stay at the back of the theatre, and throw them at people during the show. Unfortunatly the plan died when 20 people showed up.. but it would have been epic.

ps, dogs suck at fighting giant snakes.

Seriously, I wish Brian would post a notice–If you aren’t coming here to talk about how wonderful “Snakes on a Plane” is, BEAT IT!!

Anyway, here’s my local paper’s take on it–I was surprised when I found it was positive, but then I learned it wasn’t the usual movie critic, who hates EVERYTHING good. ;-)

Live in small town and was one out of five whole people who attended one of two screenings this afternoon. Was one of two laughing and screaming. The cleaning crew, my sister, and I stayed to dance to the ending credits. I’ll rate the flick four out of four for pure entertainment. No leis or mumus for me!!

Comment by so'ming — August 19, 2006 @ 8:06 pm

Movies.com also gave SoaP an A.

Comment by irrelivent — August 20, 2006 @ 12:36 am

Saw it and loved it, laughed and cheered, right up to about ten minutes before the end when I realized that Jackson would never go toe to scale with the great big boa constrictor that ate the British guy. How can you end the movie without Samuel L. Jackson fighting the mother snake!? I had a great time, but when I figured out that turning the air conditioning back on was the big battle, I was let down. After the movie, my buddy Gary and I (we put Snakes on a Plane - Rough Cut on YouTube) came up with four big fight scenes in five minutes that could have been a better end. Urgh! I’d still say go see it, though. Three fangs out of four.

Hey SnakeOwner–you may know snakes, but you know nothing of movie greatness. Most reviewers actually liked it, if you bother reading them. And who cares what critics think, anyway? The TRUE fans LOVED it, and that’s all that matters. DVD sales will more than make up for it. So make like a snake and bite me. :-p
