Snakes on a Blair Witch Comparison
June 26th, 2006 at 8:08 am

An article came out a few weeks ago discussing the connections between the pre-marketing of The Blair Witch Project and Snakes on a Plane. In the end it decided that a lot what sparked the fan attention to Snakes on a Plane was a reaction to the contempt that studios feel towards their audience, as evidenced by feeding the audience swill:

Someone will try to come up with another premise and title like this one. But the fans will see through it. They know the difference between a studio’s cynical contempt for them… and phony cynical contempt. There ain’t nothing like the real thing, baby.

I don’t necessarily agree, but it’s not a bad read.

I disagree with this article. You cannot compare the internet buzz about The Blair Witch Project to the buzz about Snakes on a Plane. The buzz of the BWP was started by the company itself, with the websites and promotion and all of that. The SoaP buzz was started by us, the fans. We got hyped up by the film. I mean, come on, it’s Snakes of a Plane. The title itself makes the movie brilliant. Plus, it’s staring fan favorite actor Samuel L Jackson. Mr. “ENGLISH MOTHERFUCKA! DO YOU SPEAK IT?” himself!

The other difference it that when it was pumped up, you didn’t quite know what you were getting with BWP. You know PRECISELY what you are getting with SoaP. Sam Jackson cursing with Snakes on a Plane. THAT’S PRETTY MUCH IT. We know this movie isn’t winning an Oscar (even though it probably should). We’re just going to have fun with it, which is what I think the movie was made for. FUN. To me, it’s like watching Commando, when Arnold is on the wheel of a moving plane that is taking off, jumps off the plane, lands on a small field of tall grass and water, lands on the grass and gets right back up without any bruises or injuries! It’sssssss FUN!!

if this article had been written two months ago, I would’ve agreed wholeheartedly. but the great thing about snakes on a plane, what I think has kept it going, is not just the fans getting involved but the studio getting involved back. david ellis and sam jackson are genuine fans who are having as much fun as we are. david ellis checks snakes on a blog, sam jackson pitches SoaP everywhere he goes, even in the possibly inappropriate mtv movie awards where the audience reaction made it clear that they didn’t know what he was talking about. plus, they had a reshoot just to get the movie closer to what we wanted it to be. I hope this starts a trend with the studios thinking more about what the audience wants instead of how they can make the audience want what they’re making.

I read a quick reference to this in my EW recently. It talked about how they’re comparable but….iono it doesn’t really seem that way to me. SOAP marketing, imo, really hasn’t done much at all…it’s all the fans.

i agree AnyankaBunnyfear, Its all been the fans with most of the marketing and i dont think theyve stepped it up enough…although at the local Hot Topic! they have the basic SoaP T-shirt. I did buy it right away.
