Snakes on Clerks II
May 24th, 2006 at 10:22 am

Clerks II was originally slated to open on August 18th (sound familiar?), but has since been moved forward to July 21st. They didn’t explicitly announce they were avoiding opening against Snakes on a Plane, but the trailer they showed at Cannes at least indicates that they’re aware of the movie. Here’s a screenshot from the end fo the trailer:

Clerks II

Kevin Smith? Are you out there? Did the movie get moved forward to avoid Snakes on a Plane? Here’s what he what said on his message board:

“Clerks II” is coming out EVEN EARLIER THIS SUMMER!

In a ballsy move that says “Fuck you: we’re a five million dollar flick and we’re coming out in the fucking middle of the summer, bitches!”, Weinstein Co. has upped the “Clerks II release date from August 18th to JULY 21st! The wait is now almost a month shorter, folks!

Why the move? Getting into Cannes changed everything. Since the film will have its world debut on May 26th, the Weinstein folks thought it’d make more sense to get the film out there sooner, rather than later. They found a weekend in which there wasn’t any flick that directly compete with the movie for an audience, and staked their claim.

Now, we’re opening against some pretty big flicks (”Lady in the Water”, “Monster House”), but nothing that’s appealing directly to our core audience. So while we’ll never open at number one (those two flicks alone are pretty mass-appeal movies), we stand to make a decent chunk of change and wind up somewhere in the top ten.

I gotta say, if I had had to choose, Snakes on a Plane or Clerks II, I would have went to Clerks II. Now I don’t have to choose so that’s good.

I’d take Snakes over Clerks 2. Considering how bad “Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back” and “Jersey Girl” were, it’s hard to tell if Clerks 2 is gonna be any good at all. Also, it should be considered that Smith seems to be out of ideas if the best he can do is make a sequel to a movie from 13 years ago. And I hope they aren’t working at the same store. I mean how realistic is it for two guys to be working at the same store as they were 13 years ago?

Now I’d take Snakes on a Plane…
because.
they’re snakes.
on a plane.
and it DOESNT get better than that.
Clerks wasn’t that great anyway.

How did you guys not like Jay and Silent Bob or Clerks?

I don’t get the joke from the end of the trailer… can anyone clarify it?

Was it just because Kevin Smith makes so many pop-culture references and he felt that he had to justify NOT making a reference to Snakes on a Plane?

If so, what does it not being a sequel have to do with anything?

Kevin Smith, for all his briiliant early work, has really fallen down the ladder into ‘oh look at all the pop culture references in my films’ land.

It all died after Dogma….

I just hope to god that the sequel can atleast be as good as the first. But still, I would have to choose SoaP over Clerks, of course. (Oh, and to Jerry–no, they aren’t working at the same store. It burns down and then they start working at a burger joint. Which is slightly less unrealistic…)
