Snakes on a Contest - Voting Stage

What should the online fans of Snakes on a Plane be called?

View Results

I collected 115 different suggestions from 89 different emails -15 were submitted more than once. I culled the list and pulled out the five most frequent submissions and five suggested by only one person. (Full Disclosure: One of them was submitted by my mom, but I won’t tell you which one.)

As previously stated, the voting will be open until Tuesday, May 16th at Midnight EST. At the conclusion of the vote, the first submitter of the top vote-getter will win one teaser poster and one shirt of their choice from either the ShelfLife or Damnation shirt store. I’ve also added a prize: the folks at Goods for Giving will print up a series of wristbands with the winning name, one of which will go to the winner.

Since I didn’t anticipate multiple submissions of the same name (which was foolish of me), I didn’t plan for multiple winners. However, I will send each submitter of the top-vote-getting name one teaser poster and one wristband (the only thing you’ll be short-changed on here is the t-shirt… please forgive me).

I’ll email everyone tonight who submitted one of the names in the poll to let them know if they were the first submitter or not. Thank you to all the people who submitted names, even if you didn’t make the top ten, you’ve still contributed. I’ll be posting the full list of submissions when the voting concludes.

Please do not claim ownership of any of the 10 names in the poll prior to the conclusion of voting. But, without claiming ownership, feel free to lobby in the comments.

I *sure* hope the maternal submission isn’t the second one on the list. Because if so … *shudders*

Comment by Brett — May 12, 2006 @ 12:15 am

Yeah, I’ll go so far as to acknowledge that it probably wasn’t that one.  But who knows, maybe I’m trying to throw you off the trail.

Comment by Snakes on a Blog — May 12, 2006 @ 12:18 am

I’m voting for SoaP Scum. It’s clever, incorporates the title, and unlike the other SoaP-word-entries, it actually makes a play on words.

Snakesonaplaniacs is difficult to type and say. Passengers is too generic. Aeroherpetologists is too difficult for most laypeople. And Motherfuckers is too obscene, at least if we want mainstream press coverage.

So I’m going with SoaP Scum.

Comment by pepeeg — May 12, 2006 @ 12:40 am

Aeroherpetologists makes us sound like the smarter-than-average folks we are. Definitely the way to go.

Comment by Holly — May 12, 2006 @ 1:03 am

oh gawd — i think some diggers are here and they are voting for motherfuckers

Comment by Pepeeg — May 12, 2006 @ 3:27 am

no offense but motherfuckers really should not be on the list, its nowhere near snake related and would never get any sort of publicity based on the name.

Go with Snakers….its a unique name, remember, we ALL fought the SoaP acronym when it was put on IMDB so why the f**k would you want it now?

Comment by Snakes in Europe — May 12, 2006 @ 5:57 am

SoaP Scum is clever, can apply to a group, is non-profane, short and clear. Vote for that.

Motherfucker, while funny, isn’t going to catch on the way other options would. Profanity is limiting in this case. Don’t vote for that.

Comment by Scum Fan — May 12, 2006 @ 7:21 am

I see NONE of mine are up there–shows the dude in charge has good taste! ;-)

I tried so hard to come up with something clever that was “Soap” related, but all I could think of was “soapdish”, and that’s beyond stupid. The “SoaP”-related ones up there are very clever–kudos to the submitters (you know who you are)!

Comment by Armitage112 — May 12, 2006 @ 9:17 am

MFers is def. stupid! It’s profane and just silly. I wouldn’t be proud to call myself that. And passengers? That’s too plane (lol). I liked alot of the submissions- Snakers, and Snakesonaplaniacs, and Aeroherpatologists are all great. I personally love Aero. That’s clever, and it’s kind of exclusive. You’d have to be one to get it, you know?

Comment by Radiance — May 12, 2006 @ 10:16 am

Brian, if MFers wins, please, PLEASE don’t start calling us that. I think a bunch of 8th graders are voting for that one. And from the looks of this comment board, the REAL fans don’t want to be called that either.

Comment by Radiance — May 12, 2006 @ 10:55 am

I dont want to be referred to as SCUM either so dont vote for SoaP Scum…besides, WTF people we all were SO pissed at the SOAP acronym on IMDB and NOW you are going to vote for it!?!?

B*LLSH*T!!!!!!!!

Vote Snakers OR YOU LOVE oSAMA bIN LADEN

Comment by Snakes in Europe — May 12, 2006 @ 11:11 am

If no one gets a majority, I demand a runoff.

Comment by Samual — May 12, 2006 @ 12:01 pm

I think Motherfuckers should be thrown OFF the ballot…its blatantly obvious people are only voting for it to be “funny” (in a juvenile way)

Comment by Snakes in Europe — May 12, 2006 @ 12:21 pm

Are you claiming that the movie “Snakes on a Plane” is not juvenile itself? A movie with the line “motherfuckin’ snakes on this motherfuckin’ plane?” How shocking! The whole point of this escapade is that it’s amusingly juvenile. Brown coats we ain’t.

Comment by hotdog — May 12, 2006 @ 12:26 pm

hotdog — the point may be that it is juvenile, but the SoaP movement is itself far from juvenile. SoaP has become an Internet phenomenon, and as the movie approaches this summer, the TV reports aren’t going to say that the movie is being promoted as an Internet meme by so-proclained “motherfuckers.”

That’s why I vote for SoaP Scum — edgy enough to be funny and cool, cute and clever enough to get mainstream coverage. And simple enough to explain to someone in a few seconds (or on a bracelet)

Comment by Pepeeg — May 12, 2006 @ 12:29 pm

I thought mine was pretty good

“The Church of Samuel L. Jackson of Latter-Day Snakes”

I guess it was too long.

Comment by Spencer — May 12, 2006 @ 12:38 pm

I would never call myself a motherfucker. Or Scum.

My vote is with Aeroherpetologists. It’s quirky enough for someone to go “huh?,” stop, and enjoy the discovery when it dawns on them half a second later. That half-second is what makes humor work.

Comment by Bruno — May 12, 2006 @ 1:15 pm

I kinda like SoaP Scum. It’s funny, it can be put in a newspaper/magazine, and it’s creative.

It’sgot my vote.

Comment by Cyrin — May 12, 2006 @ 1:36 pm

But see, Pepeeg, that’s the difference between you and me. I could care less about the phenomenon getting mainstream coverage (as if it needs more) — the Internet doesn’t have to comply with the constraints of mainstream TV, and if it did, this phenomenom would’ve never happened. I’m enjoying the Internet response (and I shudder every time I hear the phrase on, say, NPR) and can’t wait to watch the movie with a bunch of meme-ladened friends.

Comment by hotdog — May 12, 2006 @ 1:36 pm

I think MF’ers should be pulled as well. Not only is it a no-no word, it nothing to do with snakes!

Or planes!

Or snakes on planes which is the whole point!!!!

Comment by Daniel — May 12, 2006 @ 2:13 pm

Spencer–LOL–I LIKE that one–I’d have voted for it!!

And put me down as another NON-”m-f-er”!! I’d rather be called “SoaP Scum” than THAT anyday! I’m surprised that was even considered. I think Radiance had it right on–all the low-brows and adolescents must be bumping that to the top!
PLEASE people, vote for something–ANYTHING–but THAT!!

Comment by Armitage112 — May 12, 2006 @ 2:15 pm

OK, all of this in-fighting is funny in itself.

Comment by Mother — May 12, 2006 @ 2:20 pm

Well, at least “SoaP scum” is far superior to “snakesonaplaniacs” — what’s with that?

Still, I can’t believe all y’all are downplaying motherfuckers! That word virtually started this phenomenon!

Comment by hotdog — May 12, 2006 @ 2:35 pm

“Motherfuckers” is just too general a statement, and “snakesonaplaniacs” is just retarded.

Comment by Boots — May 12, 2006 @ 3:39 pm

Who else suggested “snakers” (if anyone) other than me?

Comment by Lemmy — May 12, 2006 @ 4:01 pm

hmmm… and I thought “Pit Crew” was too obvious to submit…

Comment by ShelfLife — May 12, 2006 @ 4:25 pm

If I’d have known there were a submission contest, I would have offered “Snake Charmers,” of course. Nonetheless, I am pleased that for at least once in my lifetime, I was able to vote for a winner.

Politics aside, you MotherF-ing doubters and haters, I say to you:

1) if you’re calling it too general, or think it’s nothing to do with snakes, take a lesson from Hot Dog - it’s a motherfucking quotation from the movie, and it’s integrally linked to the motherf-ing snakes!

2) you’re worried about seeming puerile or profane in regards to Snakes on a Plane? It’s not a kiddie movie, folks.

Comment by kissyface — May 12, 2006 @ 5:53 pm

“motherfuckers” is so 8th grade.

Vote for Snakers….or you are a terrorist supporting piece of shit

Comment by Snakes in Europe — May 12, 2006 @ 7:02 pm

“santorum”is also 8th grade. look how that took off.

Comment by hotdog — May 12, 2006 @ 7:26 pm

Well now, that’s what I get for not checking my mail very often! :-X

Either way, I’m a soapie… I of course, thought my other suggestion was much better.

And pit Crew… now THAT’s Whimsical enough to have worked!

Der, why didn’t I think of that?

Comment by chaoticpix93 — May 12, 2006 @ 9:02 pm

Yeah, vote SoaPies…

Comment by chaoticpix93 — May 12, 2006 @ 9:03 pm

Ok, I’ve finished my fourth final today. I’ve got one more on Monday and then a week-long writing thing that I need to get taken care of. I’m getting closer to being finished…. at which point I’ll actually be able to post new content and answer questions. If you’ve emailed me something in the past few weeks and I haven’t been responsive, I’m sorry. Thanks to everybody for voting, I’m amazed at how many votes we’ve gotten.

Comment by Snakes on a Blog — May 12, 2006 @ 9:41 pm

i agree that motherfuckers is appropriate and hilarious but this whole contest came about because cnn called us “snake-aholics.” on the news they aren’t going to be able to say motherfuckers, so it wont get any sort of recognition outside the people who visit the blog. vote for something like “snakesonaplaniacs” that could actually become a real nickname that wouldn’t be censored on the news and has some potential to gain recognition.

Comment by reddragon — May 13, 2006 @ 12:09 am

Yeah, but here’s the thing with “snakesonaplaniacs”… it sounds retarded.

Comment by Boots — May 13, 2006 @ 12:20 am

Boots: if you find the moniker “snakesonaplaniacs” retarded, I can only assume that you also find the name “Snakes on a Plane” retarded, which leads me to ask what you’re doing on this site to begin with.

Now… why in the crap is “mofo” now the leading entry? Why was this even made an entry? Are we seriously planning to adopt this name, put it on T-shirts, etc.? I hope this entry is disqualified; at the very least, I hope that the obvious ballot-stuffing which has taken place with this entry is rectified.

Comment by IQpierce — May 13, 2006 @ 2:08 am

Snakes on a Plane is a good movie title (maybe the best of all time) but “snakesonaplaniacs” is not a good fan nickname. First of all, the word is too long and runs into itself. It’s pronounced differently than it is spelled. It’s not particularly clever, and it just looks weird.

Once again let me express my support for “SoaP Scum”: Not only is it clever and makes use of the title, it also can be a great conversation starter for people new to the film, once they ask about the term’s double meaning. Also, it is edgy without being offensive. Just like Snakes on a Plane itself.

Comment by Pepeeg — May 13, 2006 @ 3:05 am

No f**king way….SNAKERS is the best choice!

I must admit though, had Pit Crew been submiytted THAT would have been my choice!

all the SoaP names are alright, the best one being SoaP scum, but when you replace snakes on a plane with SoaP you lose the entire reason that this movie is so huge even three months before it is released: the title! snakes on a plane is about snakes on a plane! that is what is so amazing about this movie. the fan name should reflect the reason that we love this movie. therefore, “snakesonaplaniacs”

Comment by reddragon — May 13, 2006 @ 10:34 am

I kinda see your argument there reddragon, but listen. According to that logic, instead of calling Star Trek fans “Trekkies”, they would be called “Star Trekkies” because it reflects the show more.

Sometimes having a little acronym (aka SoaP) can be good because then if someone who does not know it becomes intrigued, you can then explain it to them. Me, personally, i’m going for SoaP Scum.

Comment by Boots — May 13, 2006 @ 11:44 am

Aeroherpetologists is clever, and also rocks hard on toast. Motherfuckers is tacky. SoaP Scum is sort of middle-of-the-road. I did like Snakesonaplaniacs, but I see many mistypings in its future. Slitherins is too Harry Potter (unless we’re talking crossover fanfic, in which case - sigh!). Definitely gotta be Aeroherpetologists!

Comment by sabrina — May 13, 2006 @ 12:15 pm

I was leaning toward snakesonaplaniacs, but now I’m thinking that Soap Scum would look better on a T-shirt. I like you all but, that MF one is just too much for me for SO many reasons.

Comment by Mother — May 13, 2006 @ 12:24 pm

a response to boots:

people dont like star trek because its called star trek

Comment by reddragon — May 13, 2006 @ 2:17 pm

I was just using Star Trek as an example :/

Comment by Boots — May 13, 2006 @ 2:30 pm

The whole Star Trek comparison is bunk. “Star Trek” is a terrible name. The name of the show should have been “Tribbles on a Starship.” So, since the name was so suck, there was no reason to try to put the whole name into the word for their fans.

In our case, the name is awesome, we want the whole name to be in there, and if we don’t then we’re idiots.

Any of the names with “SoaP” in them are COMPLETE SELLOUTS. I mean, wasn’t this why we were in an uproar when IMDB seemed to be saying that the official name had been changed to “S.o.a.P.”? We were saying that this still watered-down the whole point, which was the fact that THE NAME SNAKES ON A PLANE IS AWESOME.

To me, only two options are even slightly viable: “snakesonaplaniacs” and “aeroherpetologists”. These are the only two which do justice in combining the concept of “snakes” and the concept of “plane.” If these two concepts are not in there, what’s the point?

The fact that “snakesonaplaniacs” is long isn’t a problem. The longness is funny. “Snakes on a Plane” is a slightly long and ridiculous name for a movie, and that’s what we love; “snakesonaplaniacs” is a very long and ridiculous name for its fans, but it’s appropriate to our sense of humor.

That, and it gives us an excuse to work the phrase “snakes on a plane” into even more conversations than before. And let’s face it, using that hilarious phrase in as many places as possible is what this is all really about.

Snakesonaplaniacs FTW.

Comment by IQpierce — May 13, 2006 @ 3:39 pm

IQpierce

We are not naming the movie here. We are naming the fans. Your argument that “we were all pissed when iMDB reported the name was SoaP” makes no sense. The movie should rightfully be called Snakes on a Plane. Naming the fans SoaP X would not take away from that, but rather enhance it, as the abbreviation is explained.

Comment by Pepeeg — May 13, 2006 @ 3:51 pm

No, my point is that the phrase “snakes on a plane” is what’s great. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m not a fan of a movie called “S.o.a.P.”, I’m a fan of a movie called SNAKES ON A PLANE. I never use the acronym “S.o.a.P.”, I always say (or write) “Snakes on a Plane”, because it is a great and hilarious phrase in ANY context, movie title or not.

It’s just a great phrase, and choosing a name that doesn’t contain this phrase would be very dumb, IMO. I was surprised not to see many more names that implemented the full phrase - such as “snakesonaplanians” or “snakesonaplanites.”

If Motherfuckers wins I propose a run off among the next three highest vote getters

Comment by Pepeeg — May 13, 2006 @ 7:20 pm

I planned on submitting “Ophites on a Plane” but missed the deadline.

=(

Comment by Jesse — May 13, 2006 @ 7:55 pm

i thought Plakes was cool. :( but i am voting for motherfuckers just because of that dude up there saying it’s innappropriate and whatever.

Comment by sasasasasa — May 13, 2006 @ 7:59 pm

I think it’s safe to assume that the “motherfuckers” entry is universally hated by all contestants. It’s just a bad joke that’s been dragged out by now.

Comment by Boots — May 13, 2006 @ 9:56 pm

See the comment by sasasasasa?? THATS what i am talking about..voting for ‘motherfuckers’ for some lame ass MTV-style “oh im so hip and cool” bullshit reason.

Motherfuckers needs to be removed from the ballo.

Comment by Snakes in Europe — May 14, 2006 @ 4:52 am

To boots:

If its so hated, why is it (as of right now) in the lead?

Comment by motherfucker — May 14, 2006 @ 2:41 pm

It’s hated by people with common sense, and I think it’s safe to say that nowadays we are a dying breed.

Comment by Cyrin — May 14, 2006 @ 2:53 pm

People who vote for ‘motherfuckers’ are terrorist supporting bastards who hate freedom.

Comment by Snakes in Europe — May 14, 2006 @ 3:20 pm

You can’t stop Snakaplania. It’s running wild.

Comment by Phillip — May 14, 2006 @ 4:49 pm

IQPierce–the tribbles were only on for one ep, I think–so to cover the whole series, it would have to be “Geeks on a Starship”. And I STILL say “M-F’ers” should NOT win, even if it does win. It’s ballot-box-stuffing by pre-tween dweebs, IMO, pure and simple.

Comment by Armitage112 — May 14, 2006 @ 5:54 pm

This is why DEMOCRACY DOESNT WORK.

Comment by Pepeeg — May 14, 2006 @ 7:20 pm

i feel like at this point its obviously going to be either “snakesonaplaniacs” or “motherfuckers.” i know im not alone in thinking it shouldnt be motherfuckers, so everyone who would vote for SoaP whatever or any of the other ones is just throwing away their votes. its like voting for ralph nadar. it makes more sense to just vote for the one that could actually win that you like more. between the two i think the obvious choice is snakesonaplaniacs

Comment by reddragon — May 14, 2006 @ 11:12 pm

reddragon why do you hate freedom? Telling people their votes are meaningless, that is unpatriotic!

Choosing ’snakers’ is the equivilant of embracing freedom, values, and liberty…all the other choices indicate a suppor tof terrorism, communism, facism, and a lot of other ism’s I cant think of so early in the morning.

Comment by Snakes in Europe — May 15, 2006 @ 12:37 am

Vote for SOAP SCUM, still lots of time remaining. In 8 hours when everyone at work logs on, they are going to see the light.

Comment by Pepeeg — May 15, 2006 @ 1:46 am

FYI, I put up the poll in the sidebar for the remainder of the voting period because it had fallen far enough down the main page that people might miss it. I’ll probably remove it from the sidebar once the polling has concluded.

By the way, are you ready for the next contest yet? This one’s going to involve photography.

Comment by Snakes on a Blog — May 15, 2006 @ 11:53 am

YES!

Comment by Boots — May 15, 2006 @ 12:18 pm

I like the poll on the sidebar. I think you should put all contests there.

Comment by Mother — May 15, 2006 @ 7:51 pm

i didnt mean to sound unpatriotic. if theres one thing that i think says freedom above all else it is snakes on a plane. i just was trying to rally against motherfuckers for reasons i feel i have already made clear and share with many of my other snakesonaplaniacs or SoaPheads or aeroherpetologists. the last thing i would ever want to do would be to alienate certain unalienable rights…on a plane.

Comment by reddragon — May 15, 2006 @ 8:55 pm

How about posters for everyone in the top 5? :)

Comment by Pepeeg — May 16, 2006 @ 12:52 am
