Snakes on a Contest
May 8th, 2006 at 12:25 am

The other day I received a nice stack of posters and now I’m looking for ways to give them away. Today I’m holding my first contest. It’s an easy contest that anybody can participate in. When CNN ran a story about Snakes on a Plane they called us online fans:

Snake-a-holics

Now, that’s not necessarily a bad name, but I think we can do better.

What should we, the online fans of Snakes on a Plane, be calling ourselves?

Use my contact form (please don’t post submissions in the comments below) and email me your suggestions. I’ll put the best suggestions up for a vote and the winner will get:
The Prize:

Rules:

    • Please no more than two suggestions per person (so think before you throw out the first two ideas that come into your head).
    • I will accept suggestions until Thursday, May 11th at Midnight EST.
    • I will then select the best suggestions and put them up for a vote.
    • The vote will last from Friday, May 12th through Tuesday, May 16th.
    • If you live outside the United States or Canada and you win, you will have to help me with the shipping costs. I have no idea how much this will cost, but we can work something out once the contest is over.

Does that sound good to everybody?  Any suggestions about how to run contests should be posted in the comments below.

Cool idea –

My one suggestion is that in the voting phase, someone can only vote if they have posted a comment here before the contest was announced, to prevent people voting multiple times.

Whats your plan for the rare happening that two (or more) people submit the same or really really really close nicknames, and it wins?

The chances of that happening are slim, but im just thinking of the possbilities.

Comment by Jason C. — May 8, 2006 @ 2:49 am

I would assume that the person who first e-mailed him would get precedence in that case

Nicknames..

How bout pathetic? guys with no life? morons?…(kidding)

snakeamaniacs!

Assuming the number of people who submit the same suggestion is limited, I’ll see what I can do about getting them both/all prizes. If it gets out of hand, I’ll see what I can do about making other arrangements.

This is great, how many posters did they send you?

Comment by Alex — May 8, 2006 @ 2:45 pm

Sent mine. My first one is a lot better than the 2nd.

Comment by Lemmy — May 8, 2006 @ 8:15 pm

Oh geez. I’m all over this like.. like snakes on a plane!

Comment by Robin Lynne — May 8, 2006 @ 8:23 pm

Alex, I’m not sure, they’re rolled up pretty tight. It’s a good sized stack. I won’t be running out any time soon.

i think everyone who appears on your site scantily clad and holding a snake should get a poster on general principle.

just a thought…

Um, oops… Guess I need to finish READING before POSTING.

Sorry guys!

Comment by chaoticpix93 — May 9, 2006 @ 4:27 pm

I’m really curious. Can I get a preview?

Comment by Mother — May 9, 2006 @ 7:45 pm

May 11th at midnight - is that the first midnight (the night of May 10th to May 11th) or the second midnight (the night of May 11th to May 12th)?

Comment by Paw — May 9, 2006 @ 7:47 pm

69 emails, nearly 150 submissions. Way more than I anticipated… and, much to my annoyance, a lot of them have the same, or very similar, suggestsions… which means I might need to rethink my prize policy.

Paw, I will stop accepting submissions immediately after 11:59pm on Thursday evening, the 11th.

Umm just making voting allow 1 vote per IP address
or you have to register and allow only 1 IP address or 1 per email address

Comment by BojacRedleif — May 10, 2006 @ 10:24 am

uh yeah and has anybody used a similar suggestion to mine? I should override all similar suggestions since I actually made a SOAP video

Comment by BojacRedleif — May 10, 2006 @ 10:26 am

Was mine on of the similar ones? Do I get disqualified for being related? I think family should get extra credit.

“69 emails, nearly 150 submissions.”

Means some people are submitting more than the limit of 2! I sent 2 e-mails with 2 suggestions so it’s even worse with 67 emails for nearly 148 suggestions!

Don’t read too much into the math there, I haven’t tallied the actual submissions, just the number of emails I got. A few people did submit more than two, but I’m just going to look at the first two and ignore the rest.

Comment by Snakes on a Blog — May 10, 2006 @ 12:26 pm

Hey, why don’t we share our submissions? I mean, I’m curious to see what others have come up with, and since we’ve already submitted them, wouldn’t Brian know who submitted what first (if a “Hey, I came up with that one and I didn’t get a poster/shirt!” dispute arises?). C’mon you guys, let’s share!

Comment by Radiance — May 10, 2006 @ 1:15 pm

I’ll post them all once the voting is over.

Comment by Snakes on a Blog — May 10, 2006 @ 1:17 pm

Here’s an idea, send an email to the people who submitted entries but tell them if their entry is used or not used so that we can send in more until we get one that isn’t because I would hate to have mine be used and never know about it and lose my shot for a poster.

Or you could post a list of the taken names so we’ll know if we got in

Comment by BojacRedleif — May 10, 2006 @ 7:54 pm

[...] Here’s part 1 and part 2. That big snake was 20 feet long and 450 pounds. Also, keep the contest suggestions coming. [...]

When you post all the suggestions, are you going to post the names of the people who suggested them?? I don’t want to be associated with my suggestions–they really bite. But I HAD to try for a free poster!

Anyway, it would be cool if you have the time to take all those who were suggested MORE than once and list just HOW many times they were suggested. Like, “Snake-a-holics was suggested 78 times”, stuff like that.

Just IMHO.

Comment by Armitage112 — May 11, 2006 @ 11:21 am

You described exactly what I was planning on doing.

I will not associate submissions with names (you can of course take credit for whatever you’d like when I post the full list). I will list the number of times something was suggested.

I might have to limit prizes to the first person or first two people who suggested something. I haven’t tallied to see how many times people have suggested the same thing, but at least one or two have been coming up frequently. If it’s 50 people, I can’t hand out that many prizes.

I recognize that I should have thought of this before I offered the contest, I guess I didn’t anticipate (a) so many suggestions and (b) so many repeats.

Comment by Snakes on a Blog — May 11, 2006 @ 11:27 am

[...] There are now 12 hours remaining until midnight (EST), at which point I will stop taking suggestions for the contest.  I’ll put the voting up either tonight or tomorrow afternoon. [...]

Just make sure I get in on the contest for atleast 1 of my suggestions.
