Snakes on a Teaser Trailer

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

It doesn’t have any new footage, but it’s a got a simplicity that I really like. They’ve been doing a good job in Hollywood. I was told they were going to be putting the trailer online this week, I wonder if this is what they meant?

You can also watch it on YouTube if you don’t like .avi files.

I’ll be flying and then moving all day tomorrow and I’ll be living on couches for two days after that, so I’ll be out of touch for a while. While you’re here, check out Fan Art, Fan Songs, Fan Comics, Fan Clothing and Fan Videos.

Oh, and remember to enter my contest.

Snakes on a Lin Shaye Interview

Sunday, May 28th, 2006

The other day I stumbled across a brief interview with Lin Shaye who plays a stewardess in the Snakes on a Plane on About.com. I bookmarked it, but when I came back the interview was missing. The best I can come up with now is this Google Cached version which probably won’t last forever, so I’m going to reproduce it in its entirety below:

Are there snakes on that plane? Oh, there are snakes. There’s MFin’ snakes on the MFin’ plane.

Did you have to reshoot anything for Snakes on a Plane? No. They actually originally asked me to and then they said they had what they needed. They were doing stuff from the snakes point of view which I think is pretty funny and they turned it into a hard R. It’s gotten such pre-press online that the fans have actually told the studio what they need to do. So they went back and made it a hard R, made it much scarier and gorier and they actually had Sam come back to vocalize, “Get the motherf***in’ snakes off the motherf***in’ plane” because fans have been going crazy with that idea.

Does he yell at you? No, but if he did he’d be scary. He is a wonderful, amazing guy and actor. He’s really what you see is what you get. He’s got huge integrity and he’s smart and funny and scary. He’s really wonderful. I think it’s going to be a fantastic film.

What kind of snakes do you deal with? A rattlesnake and I play the sort of senior stewardess on the plane and I save a baby and get bit by a rattlesnake and it’s really going to be fun. And we’re here for 2001 Maniacs which just came out on DVD and which is fabulous.

Did you do DVD extras? I’m pretty sure there is some EPK that I did. I think I did some interviews but nothing extra other than outtakes from the film and what we had already shot.

Samuel L. Jackson says he did Snakes on a Plane because the title says it all. Why did you choose it? Sort of the same reason and also I knew that the character was kind of a heroine and she’s kind of a bit of humanity in the middle of all this madness. I have a great death scene so that was really fun for an actress.

Are there more CGI or real snakes? Both. They used a lot of CGI but they did use real snakes. They had a 600 pound Burmese Cobra on set that was extraordinary. It took 10 people to hold her. It was the most beautiful creature you ever saw. I’m not afraid of snakes. I really find them fascinating and what’s interesting is they’re afraid of falling, so when you handle them, that’s kind of what that’s all about. It’s almost like doing Tai Chi. You have to move with them. They’ll make a move and you find yourself moving very gracefully and very carefully. It’s really quite an experience. They have a bad rap like sharks but they’re really amazing creatures.

And here’s the picture (by some guy named Fred Topel) that accompanied the story:

Snakes on an Official Webpage Update

Friday, May 26th, 2006

The official Snakes on a Plane website just underwent an update with some new content. They included a back catalogue of all the old “Fan Site of the Week” links as well as a whole new section with new content (including a video introduction from Samuel L. Jackson as Agent Neville Flynn). I don’t have time to check it out right now, but it looks like there’s a bunch of new video and sound clips.  (Also, an annoying registration screen… yuck.)
How does it look?

Snakes on a Contest II: T-Shirt Photography

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

I enjoyed the first contest so much, I think it’s high time for a second. This one is going to be a photography contest. What I’m looking for is:

Pictures of you, wearing a Snakes on Plane shirt (or other piece of merchandise), in a funny or unusual situation.

I’m thinking of pictures of people bungie jumping, giving a presentation to a board-room full of men in suits, at the Grand Canyon, receiving oral surgery, teaching a classroom full of children… all while wearing a Snakes on a Plane shirt/hat/whatever. Be creative, I’m looking for ideas that leave me laughing, intrigued or confused. Quality of the picture matters, but not as much as content.

Email copies of your pictures to me at SnakesOnABLogContest@Gmail.Com (please don’t post submissions in the comments below). I’ll put the best submissions up for a vote and the winner will get:

The Prize:

Rules:

    • No more than five submissions per person (I will stop looking at them after five).
    • If possible, email me the actual photos, not links to the photos. Additionally, if possible please shrink photos to no larger than 800×600. If your email is going to be larger than 8mb, please break it into several emails.
    • With limited exceptions, no photoshopping. (You are permitted to crop, rotate, and do general color / tint / contrast adjustment. No changing the actual content of the photo.)
    • I will accept suggestions until Monday, June 5th at Midnight EST.
    • I will select the best suggestions and put them up for a vote.
    • The vote will last from Tuesday, June 6th through Saturday, June 10th at noon.
    • If you live outside the United States or Canada and you win, you may have to help me with the shipping costs. We’ll come up with arrangements at the conclusion of the contest.

I’m giving you a long time to submit photos so you can pick up a shirt, or other artifact, if you haven’t already done so. Here are all the shirts that I’ve posted on my site, here are all the shirts at CafePress, and here are our contest sponsors (Damnation-Inc., Goods for Giving, and ShelfLife), from whom you can pick up shirts and things:

SoaP Shirt Bracelet SoaP Shirt

Making your own shirt is fine, by the way.

So… is anybody actually going to send me a picture? I wonder.

UPDATE: My mother has asked me to ask you not to do anything illegal or dangerous in order to obtain these picture.  If you hurt yourself or somebody else, you’re on your own.

Snakes on an Official Theatrical Trailer Before X-Men 3

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

I’ve heard rumbings of this for a few weeks now, but this seems concrete:

I work at a movie theater and we have the trailer on one of our X-Men 3 prints. I saw it last night (Wednesday). It’s alright - mostly text with a few clips of the movie in the middle. Total runtime is 56 sec. I should note that this will not appear on EVERY X-Men 3 print (from what i can tell). For example, our theater got 4 prints of X-Men 3 and the SoaP trailer only appears on one of them.

So, if anybody is desperate to see the trailer, call your local theater and find out which X3 screens the trailer will be running on. Please let me know when it shows up online, I’ll post the link.

Snakes on Clerks II

Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

Clerks II was originally slated to open on August 18th (sound familiar?), but has since been moved forward to July 21st. They didn’t explicitly announce they were avoiding opening against Snakes on a Plane, but the trailer they showed at Cannes at least indicates that they’re aware of the movie. Here’s a screenshot from the end fo the trailer:

Clerks II

Kevin Smith? Are you out there? Did the movie get moved forward to avoid Snakes on a Plane? Here’s what he what said on his message board:

“Clerks II” is coming out EVEN EARLIER THIS SUMMER!

In a ballsy move that says “Fuck you: we’re a five million dollar flick and we’re coming out in the fucking middle of the summer, bitches!”, Weinstein Co. has upped the “Clerks II release date from August 18th to JULY 21st! The wait is now almost a month shorter, folks!

Why the move? Getting into Cannes changed everything. Since the film will have its world debut on May 26th, the Weinstein folks thought it’d make more sense to get the film out there sooner, rather than later. They found a weekend in which there wasn’t any flick that directly compete with the movie for an audience, and staked their claim.

Now, we’re opening against some pretty big flicks (”Lady in the Water”, “Monster House”), but nothing that’s appealing directly to our core audience. So while we’ll never open at number one (those two flicks alone are pretty mass-appeal movies), we stand to make a decent chunk of change and wind up somewhere in the top ten.

Snakes on more Livejournal Fan Fiction

Sunday, May 21st, 2006

Although we’ve discussed Snakes on a Plane crossover fan fiction before, neverbeen2spain seems to have garnered a lot of support for a mass collection of new work:

So, my challenge to you (and by you, I mean anyone who happens to wander by) is to employ your favorite fandom ability to make SoaP! a wider phenomenon.

Basically I’m asking for fic (any length, any rating), icons, wallpapers, songs, filk songs, playlists, manips, other fanart, vids, cheese doodle art, etc. depicting snakes on a plane in your chosen (big, small, or medium) fandom.

They’re collecting submissions through early June, so check it out if you’re interested. There’s a lot more information.

Snakes on Julianna Margulies in EW

Sunday, May 21st, 2006

Julianna Margulies does an interview in this week’s Entertainment Weekly including a picture of her in her stewardess costume and some discussion of the movie:

I didn’t choose it because I was getting some intellectual thrill out of it… I thought it would be a hoot, it was nice to pay the mortgage, and i got to work with Sam Jackson… I’ve yet to be in a big movie. This could be big. But if not, it was a fun romp.

Alas, Entertainment Weekly does not put its content online, so here’s a scan of the relevent portions of the story (thanks Seth):

Snakes sur une blog francaise

Saturday, May 20th, 2006

Up until now, only English speakers could enjoy all that is Snakes on a Plane. Well, that is no longer the case. This Snakes on a Plane site is on a french server and, unsurprisingly, written mostly in French (with the phrase “snakes on a plane” being the major excpetion). I’ve gone to the trouble of snagging thier content, but I’m sure they’ll be updating so you should consider checking their site regularly if, you know, you’re french. Here’s what they’ve got:

Snakes on a Kindergarten Class II

Saturday, May 20th, 2006

A few days ago our friend Matt sent in a picture of his Kindergarten class holding up drawings they had made of the teaser poster, and, despite some controversy in the comments, we all found it cute. So cute, in fact, that Matt sent in a second picture of his class, as well as the coloring book pattern he made for his kids (it’s big so you can print it out and use it for your kids, too):

soap coloring snakes Snakes on a Plane Kindergarten Class

At the time Matt mentioned that he had a children’s version of the Snakes on a Plane story that he had been telling to his class and I asked him to type it up for us. It’s long, so I’m only going to put the first paragraph before the jump, but follow the link and you can read the whole thing. He asked me to preface the story by saying, “It may seem lame when you’re reading it, but with the right dramatical storytelling… it is a classic!” Here we go:

Once upon a time, in Hawaii, there was a man named Job having a good time at a luau. When the luau ended, Job threw his pineappled ham into the trash and went to his car. As he was unlocking his car, he heard… “HELP ME!!! PLEASE HELP ME!” Someone was in trouble. Now Job was a good man, so he decided to go find out who was screaming and see if he could help. He walked towards the voice, but he turned the corner…he saw something that he would NEVER forget! Twenty feet in front of him he saw Mr. No-Good, the infamous Hawaiian villain whom no one had ever seen before, steeling an old woman’s purse and cookies. Now Job was a good man and wanted to help the old woman, but he didn’t want Mr. No-Good to find out who he was, so he ran to the police station. As he burst through the doors he began shouting, “I JUST SAW MR. NO-GOOD STEALING COOKIES OUTSIDE”.

Snakes on a Dateline Pedophile

I’m not entirely clear where Dateline is going with this, but I’ve gotten a few emails similar to this one:

Dateline has a new special called “To Catch a Child Predator.” On this show, they do just that. They pretend to be teen girls online and chat with old dudes and get them to meet them somewhere to catch them. The best part is that the screen name they use when pretending to be a teen girl is “snakesonagirl” the next episode airs 5/17 on NBC.

UPDATE:

Two quick updates. First I received the following email which gives a little bit of background on the story:

Hola, my name is Xavier of Perverted-Justice.com, the people who did the “chat-room trolling” for the Dateline episode you referenced. When we create our faux-minor characters, we like to give them a bit of personality. While I was struggling to come up with something new, I thought of this blog which I read pretty often and that’s why “Snakesonagirl” was mentioned on the Dateline episode, as it was my trolling name in Yahoo Florida chats.

The name helped nab three predators, one of which has had prior charges and another which brought duct tape and rope hence it was pretty useful!

On a lighter side, I was disappointed by how many moronic older males had no idea what Snakes on a Plane was. Do more media!

I’m going to claim credit for catching these people myself, somehow. Pretty neat, eh? Also, I was fortunate enough to be sent a screencapture of the story with Snakesonagirl on the screen (thanks Rick):

UPDATE: Snakes on a CBS Interview

Thursday, May 18th, 2006

This morning the CBS Evening News came by and did an interview with me for a piece running probably during Saturday or Sunday evening’s newscast at either 6:00pm or 6:30pm (you’ll have to check your own schedules).

Update (5/20/06 at 10:51 am):

CBS let me know that the piece won’t air until NEXT weekend at the earliest, meaning either Saturday (5/27/06) or Sunday (5/28/06). I’ll let you know if/when I find more.

Snakes on the Daily Show

Thursday, May 18th, 2006

I’ve had a longish night, but I wanted to quickly provide this clip (thanks Crazymonk) from the Daily Show from last night where Jon Stewart, briefly, mentions Snakes on a Plane while doing his George Bush impression.

PS. I’m doing an interview with CBS News tomorrow morning and I’m up far too late. I’m going to have big bags under my eyes and their producer is going to yell at me.
