Snakes on a Tagworld Contest - Day 3

Saturday, April 22nd, 2006

The Tagworld saga continues. Thanks to snakecharmer for continuing to create running vote tallies (since Tagworld chooses not to):

10. Wizardz of Rhyme w/Planes on a Snake 112 votes (SOAP)
9. Runaway Pheonix with Snakes on a Plane 123 votes (SOAP)
8. Ben Rusch with Wash Your Mouth Out 136 votes
7. Former Fat Boys with Snakes on a Plane 138 votes (SOAP)
6. 50412 with Snakes on a Plane 140 votes (SOAP)
5. Zachery with Serious Problem 155 votes (SOAP)
4. John Elkins with Keep it Moving 168 votes (BS)
3. The guesstimates w/Two Snakes on a Plane 175 votes (SOAP)
2. Hollywood.mp3 at 325 votes (BS)
1. Futuristic Sex Robots w/Snakes on a Plane at 378 votes (SOAP)

Since Tagworld has a bunch of songs that weren’t written by true Snakes on a Plane fans, it’s been suggested that we create a list of songs to encourage people to listen to and consider voting for. Clearly the songs in the top ten are already covered, but what other songs have you voted for that aren’t listed?

Let’s make sure New Line has a solid selection to chose from (none of this Hollywood.mp3 crap).

Snakes on Videos III

Saturday, April 22nd, 2006

I’ve got three new videos for you today. No screenshots, becuase I’m running short on time, but here they are:

The first is a fan-made trailer, and it’s good. The second is a video showing what might have happened to get Snakes on a Plane greenlight… let me just say that it has to do, ever so slightly, with the Holocaust. The third video is similar to the one by Jack Hanniford… it was made by an 8 year old and a 5 year old… it doesn’t quite have the dramatic tension of Hanniford’s, but it’s not without its charm.

Snakes on a Comic XVI

Friday, April 21st, 2006

Ok, the site is slow today. An AP story has been picked up by a lot of news outlets and I’m getting a lot of new traffic. 10,000 people today thus far… it slows down the works. Anyway, to lift the spirits of all you new people, here are two comics. The first is from The Maneater, the second is from Diesel Sweeties:

Snakes on a Tagworld Contest Update

Friday, April 21st, 2006

Yesterday I badmouthed the Tagworld contest listing lots of problems with their voting website. It looks like they’ve taken the time to fix some of my initial problems. For example, the “random” sort now actually shows you different songs each time, the vote counters seem to work, the pop-ups aren’t nearly as confusing, and you get to see 12 (up from 10) songs per page.

They still don’t allow you to scroll quickly to bands in the depths of the alphabet (bands starting with the letter ‘Z’ are screwed) and there’s no way to show the top vote getters, but I’m glad they fixed a lot of the problems. I’m still dismayed by the sheer number of bands with songs totally unrelated to the movie, but hopefully we can vote them out (and hopefully New Line won’t pick one of those as the winner).

Anyway, reader snakecharmer was nice enough to tally the current leaders:

10. The guesstimates w/Two Snakes on a Plane 63 votes (SOAP)
9. Shanky Drank with Final Snakes 64 (SOAP)
8. Kyle.mcmahon with Gone 73 votes (BS)
7. Wizardz of Rhyme with Planes on a Snakes 82 votes (SOAP)
6. Runaway Pheonix with Snakes on a Plane 90 votes (SOAP)
5. Ben Rusch with Wash your Mouth out 111 votes (BS)
4. Zachery with Serious Problem 117 votes (SOAP)
3. 50412 with Snakes on a Plane 120 votes (SOAP)
2. Futuristic Sex Robots w/Snakes on a Plane at 260 votes (SOAP)
1. Hollywood.mp3 at 277 votes (BS)

Let’s see if we can vote Hollywood.mp3 off this list, their song is an infidel… totally non-snakes related.

And if anyone feels like keeping these tallies up to date in the comments, I’ll post daily updates. Please post your suggestions of bands to vote for in the comments. You can also look through songs posted here for suggestions.

Snakes on a Drink II

Friday, April 21st, 2006

Well, it looks like the drink I put online last week has a little bit of competition to be the REAL Snakes on a Plane Drink. Here’s option 2 from Devin:

My friends and I had been hard at work to commemorate Snakes on a Plane with its own drink. We have finally come up with something.

We drink at an Irish pub, so we currently are calling it “Snakes on an Irish Plane.”

There is a pre-existing drink called a ‘Snake Bite.’ A snake bite is half a pint of Guinness Stout, and half a pint of Woodchuck Amber Cider. A snake on an Irish plane is drinking a snake bite and finishing it with an airplane bottle of Bailey’s Irish Cream.

And they included this handy graphic to remind you how to make it:

SoaP drink

We might need to have some sort of a Drink-Off to decide which is best.

Snakes on a Tagworld Contest’s Bad Webpage (UPDATE)

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

The Tagworld song contest is live and you can now vote on submissions. I’ve got a lot of problems with the webpage:

    • You need to register to vote
    • It seems that the voting system is somewhat broken (when I logged in for the first time I was told that I’d already voted for 6 people and had 4 votes remaining… I hadn’t voted for anybody, I just registered).
    • Why can you only vote for 10? Who does it hurt if I vote for 100?
    • When I voted in Firefox, I got a weird pop-up that looked like an error message and said ‘9′. Did that mean I had nine votes remaining?
    • I apparently can’t change my vote once it’s been entered.
    • There’s no indication of how many songs have been submitted.
    • You’re only shown a small number of songs at once. It’s very hard to find a song that you like because you can only see ten at time sorted alphabetically or randomly. You can’t skip and you can’t search. So, if you’re looking for a song by a band starting with the letter ‘Z’, you’re going to have to spend a LOT of time searching. I’d be seriously surprised if the winners all started with the letter ‘A’… it’s just easier to vote for them.
    • There’s no way to link to a song you’d like to encourage people to vote for. If I found a good song, all I could do was tell you the name and force you fight your way through the lousy interface to find it. Why can’t I send someone a link that would let them vote for the one song?

This would be a lot more user friendly if we were provided with a full list of all submissions. I don’t need to see the band’s cover art, just show me a long list with the name of each band, the name of their song, a way to play the song on that page, and a way to vote. Don’t limit the number of votes I get, or at least allow me to change my mind once I’ve voted. If you have to place the songs on different pages due to the number of submissions allow people to link to individual pages and individual songs, and add a means of skipping quickly between non-consequetive pages, or add a search feature.

So, yeah, I’m underwhelmed by the voting process. I was expecting more.

Boo to Tagworld. You’ve still go time, you can make this better.

UPDATE 4/20/06 at 10:00am - it appears that TagWorld has made an effort to fix some of the problems, they now list how many songs were submitted (425) and the system that counts how many songs you’ve voted for is not broken in a DIFFERENT way. Here are the new problems:

    • The voting system is broken in a new manner. I had voted for one song, which it said correctly. When I voted for a second song, the counter for the number of times I’ve voted jumped to three, don’t know why.
    • When you click on the play icon for a song it just brings you to an error page. You can’t actually listen to the songs. Bah.
    • The ‘Random’ sort isn’t random, every time you load the page in ‘Random’ you get the same ten songs. I suspect that a vast majority of the top 25 vote getting songs will start with the letter ‘A’ or be in the first group of 10 ‘Random’ songs.

All I know is that if there’s a significant number of songs in the top-25 that are not directly Snakes on a Plane related, it’s going to be disappointing.

Also, people are complaining in the comments about songs that were submitted but not included.  All in all, a real coup for Tagworld.  But, you know, the bloody failed kind.

Snakes on Evolution

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

CNN just posted a story discussing how snakes “evolved on land.”

I don’t know about everybody else, but I’m pretty sure they evolved in the air.

I’ve been very slowly messing around with a forum script to see if it was worth integrating into the site. I haven’t decided if this is worthwhile yet, but check it out and let me know if you think this is something you would use:

Snakes on a Samuel L. Jackson Interview

Tuesday, April 18th, 2006

USA Today snagged the first interview with Samuel L. Jackson since the internet phenom hit the mainstream press. The authored asked me for a quote but I didn’t get back to her soon enough… damn my slow typing! Here’s what he had to say about our perception of him:

“It’s interesting how they perceive you as an actor,” Jackson says. “A whole faction thinks that I’m a bad (guy). I just happen to be in those kinds of films. I like to do sensitive movies, but they ignore those.”

No surprise that this tough bleeper isn’t afraid of snakes. “I grew up in the country. If we saw a snake, the snake was in more trouble than we were.” Nor do planes rattle him.

Aww… Samuel. We don’t think you’re a bad guy. Ok, well, some people think you’re a bad guy. But most of us think you’re downright lovable.

Snakes on Songs XII

Tuesday, April 18th, 2006

We just had a big batch of fan-made songs the other day (the end of the TagWorld contest submission period created this rush, I’m sure) and today I have a few more for you. Enjoy:

The Snake by Fenton Barnes and the Gold Diggers

Two Snakes on a Plane by The Guesstimates

Snakes on a Bible story

Tuesday, April 18th, 2006

We’re All Mad Here - Mr. Mahfradenot brings us this little piece of Snakes on a Plane / Bible crossover fan fiction:

[INTERIOR SHOT: Dark wooden cabin, lit by flickering oil lamps. A man and his two sons stand in the middle, with random animals milling about behind them.]

MAN: All right, everything went off without a hitch. We got at least two of all the animals on here, right?

SON 1: Absolutely! I got all of the mammals rounded up…

SON 2: …and I took care of the reptiles!

MAN: (looking shocked) Reptiles? You tellin’ me there are snakes on this ark?

[FADE OUT as rattling and hissing begins to be heard in the background.]

ANNOUNCER: Samuel L. Jackson IS Noah IN Snakes on an Ark! With Ben Stein as the voice of God.

GOD: Noah? Noah?

[Cut to OUTSIDE, on the top deck of the Ark. In the driving rain, Noah is shaking SON 2 by the shoulders. The Ark is tossed as lightning flashes in the background.]

NOAH: What part of forty days and forty nights did you not understand? When God said “every living thing,” he didn’t mean the SNAKES! (Thunder crashes) Remember the Garden of Eden? Remember what happened there?!

[Lightning flashes and the screen goes black. CUT TO "Snakes on an Ark" logo. Announcer blathers some stuff about ratings and whatnot. The money rolls in.]

Man, we need more Bible stories like this.

Snakes on a Comic XV

Monday, April 17th, 2006

My 15th comic post and we’ve come full circle. My first comic post included this comic from OverCompensating.com… it was that comic that brought a lot of attention to the movie (not me posting it, the comic itself). Anyway, Jeffrey Rowland has posted a second comic dealing with Snakes on a Plane. This one’s a little bit more maudlin, but what are you going to do?

Snakes on a 300,000 visitor contest

Monday, April 17th, 2006

Hey, sometime in the next day this counter will cross over to 300,000 visitors:

I’m going to have a mini-contest. The first person to send me a screen capture of that counter above 300,000 will win an exciting prize. Please don’t cheat. If you’re not technically savvy enough to do a full screen capture, you can right-click on the image and choose “Save Image As…” then save it to your hard drive and let me know.

UPDATE: Damin gets it.  I’ll be touch shortly about your prize.
