Snakes on a David Ellis Interview
April 28th, 2006 at 11:54 pm

Liquid Generation has a video interview up with director David Ellis. It took me about a million years to get through their annoying loading process, but you get a lot of information when you finally get to the video. For example:

    • The snakes are extra angry because they bad guys have released “pheromones” in the air system.
    • The snakes are NOT a metaphor for muslim extremists.
    • They occasionally “lost” snakes while shooting and had to do counts after scenes to prevent this.
    • Soul Plane “had a bunch of black people and they had no snakes,” which was the problem with that film.
    • “First Class or Snake Class” would have been a good alternate title.

David Ellis then goes on to direct his own Fan Video version of the film using action figures, a paper airplane, and a bunch of snakes. It’s pretty amusing. It’s nice to see people involved with the film having a good time with it.

Here’s a few screenshots from the video:

They’ve also posted an extended transcript of the interview which goes into much more detail than the video. I haven’t read it yet.

PS. I’m officially in law school finals mode now. I turned down a live TV interview request today and I may be slow in getting things online for the next few weeks. If you email me and I don’t write back, or don’t post something online quickly, this is why. I’ll do my best, but no promises. I’ll catch up once school is over, but you’ll need to cut me a little bit of slack for the month of May.

All previous Fan Video.

I think the ONLY thing that would make Snakes on a Plane better now, would be if Bruce Campbell was in it.

‘Snakes’ describing relatively evil people — that class of insensitive jetsetters or those behind Sept. 11. Still trying to digest suicide-bomber mentality, we repress the horror, release slowly the snakes of our nightmares into the safety of a public facility (the shared aspect of Sept. 11.)
Heightened security checkpoint overlooks potential threat of lethal snakes: a scenario from the post-Sept. 11 collective unconsciousness.
Common symbol of rebirth, sloughing its skin etc. Bible = serpent as redeemer snaking through the cross/tree with an invite to eternal life; life begins in an act of rebellion. Duality: left or right hand of god; the childish, threatening, condemning Father/Mother forgiving, nurturing, woman, yin, yielding, matriarch eternal vs. yang, the tiller, the usurper of this authority; the essential rapist.
The evil monkey Yahweh, in Sagan’s tree of Eden, fear of hiss, fear of fall.
Umbilical snake, phallic snake, spinal snake, corpus colossum, the messenger Mercury between worlds of consciousness and unconscious realms, coiled around its two crosses: one, buried like roots beneath the surface (our collective); the other representing the Father, atop the tree, the dead angel, fallen to earth to till with rage.
‘Snakes on a plane’ is representative of this height lost; paradise lost; the necessity of our having shed our ancient skins: evolution; the cross as the tree of former life; the fruits of consciousness that awaken our senses to our own innate Godlike quality. The apple as the sexual nexus, the nourishment of creative thought; the new life; leaving mystery in its wake; like deciphering a dream.
Snakes on a plane is our shell of existence like Eliot’s Hollow Men, moving at light speed and yet unable to shed the essence and memory of our heritage: the eternal sloughing (Nietzsche’s nightmare; the eternal recurrence.) Snakes emerge in our dreams. This movie is the meaning of those nightmares. Our lives, no matter how far we progress, our the essence of duality and mystery. Like Sartre points out, we must, every moment, give birth to ourselves inside the nothingness; inside this empty fuselage of progress.
Snakes on a plane will come crashing down to earth if we don’t heed the warnings of Jung, Reich, Freud and Socrates: know thyself; know thy inner self; and, like Yeshu, the son of Man, (we die for our sins) and walk we ‘will’ on the water (that is, without foundation as Sartre shows us) – we don’t even have the luxury of water.
