Snakes on a Tagworld Contest’s Bad Webpage (UPDATE)
April 20th, 2006 at 10:00 am

The Tagworld song contest is live and you can now vote on submissions. I’ve got a lot of problems with the webpage:

    • You need to register to vote
    • It seems that the voting system is somewhat broken (when I logged in for the first time I was told that I’d already voted for 6 people and had 4 votes remaining… I hadn’t voted for anybody, I just registered).
    • Why can you only vote for 10? Who does it hurt if I vote for 100?
    • When I voted in Firefox, I got a weird pop-up that looked like an error message and said ‘9′. Did that mean I had nine votes remaining?
    • I apparently can’t change my vote once it’s been entered.
    • There’s no indication of how many songs have been submitted.
    • You’re only shown a small number of songs at once. It’s very hard to find a song that you like because you can only see ten at time sorted alphabetically or randomly. You can’t skip and you can’t search. So, if you’re looking for a song by a band starting with the letter ‘Z’, you’re going to have to spend a LOT of time searching. I’d be seriously surprised if the winners all started with the letter ‘A’… it’s just easier to vote for them.
    • There’s no way to link to a song you’d like to encourage people to vote for. If I found a good song, all I could do was tell you the name and force you fight your way through the lousy interface to find it. Why can’t I send someone a link that would let them vote for the one song?

This would be a lot more user friendly if we were provided with a full list of all submissions. I don’t need to see the band’s cover art, just show me a long list with the name of each band, the name of their song, a way to play the song on that page, and a way to vote. Don’t limit the number of votes I get, or at least allow me to change my mind once I’ve voted. If you have to place the songs on different pages due to the number of submissions allow people to link to individual pages and individual songs, and add a means of skipping quickly between non-consequetive pages, or add a search feature.

So, yeah, I’m underwhelmed by the voting process. I was expecting more.

Boo to Tagworld. You’ve still go time, you can make this better.

UPDATE 4/20/06 at 10:00am - it appears that TagWorld has made an effort to fix some of the problems, they now list how many songs were submitted (425) and the system that counts how many songs you’ve voted for is not broken in a DIFFERENT way. Here are the new problems:

    • The voting system is broken in a new manner. I had voted for one song, which it said correctly. When I voted for a second song, the counter for the number of times I’ve voted jumped to three, don’t know why.
    • When you click on the play icon for a song it just brings you to an error page. You can’t actually listen to the songs. Bah.
    • The ‘Random’ sort isn’t random, every time you load the page in ‘Random’ you get the same ten songs. I suspect that a vast majority of the top 25 vote getting songs will start with the letter ‘A’ or be in the first group of 10 ‘Random’ songs.

All I know is that if there’s a significant number of songs in the top-25 that are not directly Snakes on a Plane related, it’s going to be disappointing.

Also, people are complaining in the comments about songs that were submitted but not included.  All in all, a real coup for Tagworld.  But, you know, the bloody failed kind.

Yeah, I can’t even get any of the stupid songs to load.. I guess they wanted to rip off myspace’s bugginess too.

And on top of all that they don’t have our song listed: http://www.planetidiot.com/nispy/secrets/FINAL_Snakes_On_A_Plane_(Goin’_Down).mp3

and yes we got it in on time.

Comment by nispy — April 19, 2006 @ 10:47 pm

and a lot of the songs are not actually SoaP related. wtf. particularly since we just have to search laboriously through each page, having much of it be non-movie music is kind of lame.
Oh, if it is not inappropriate to mention in this venue, please check out our song. “Warm Blood (Snakes on a Plane)” by B for Brontosaurus. (indie/by name=on the first page)
Thanks.

Comment by Ben — April 20, 2006 @ 12:56 am

I also noticed most of the songs have nothing to do with snakes or planes, which is just lame. And will probably be the winners because they have fans who don’t give a crap about SoaP in the first place.

On top of that, now their site is down. Plus no response to my frantic emails for help getting our song listed. Maybe the studio shouldn’t have held a contest on a “beta” website?

Comment by nispy — April 20, 2006 @ 9:34 am

Yeah the site is down. Maybe they’re making improvements?

I think the reason taht you can’t link to/find easily any one specific song is so that voting can’t be stacked by some script kiddie or a targeted campaign to get people to vote for one particular song. Instead, if everyone is getting a random selection of songs then spread over all the votes, the ‘best’ song should get the most votes.

sounds like there are interface problems, but I don’t think that’s one of them.

Comment by Jason — April 20, 2006 @ 9:50 am

yah, I submitted a song (written specifically for the contest, linkage: http://www.musicv2.com/stream.php?id=19426 ) and it’s not up either. At first I thought it was due to the sloppy production quality, but after painstakingly trying to listen to some of the songs getting votes, I don’t think that’s the case.
Anyway, it’s called “Mr. Falcon” with an intro in slight tribute to Sam Jackson in the Shaft remake and the title is a reference to a famous overdub used in the Die Hard 2 (another cheesy plane movie) TV broadcasts (”Yippee Ki Yay, MR FALCON”).

Comment by Mo — April 20, 2006 @ 10:35 am

Having 425 songs in a contest is ridiculous anyway. They should have only accepted songs about the movie.

Comment by Jim — April 20, 2006 @ 10:53 am

Agreed… or at least they should have set up some sort of “Songs that actually include the words Snakes on a Plane in the lyrics” filter.

Comment by Snakes on a Blog — April 20, 2006 @ 11:10 am

Or how about the fact they simply didn’t include my song which was submitted before the first deadline.

They sent me some email saying I had to respond because they didn’t know which of my songs I wanted entered, so I emailed them back 3 minutes later (this was last monday) and I guess they just figured they had enough entrants.

Here’s my song though:

Comment by Benjamin Garbe — April 20, 2006 @ 11:17 am

Tagworld needs to delete all the songs that aren’t made for Snakes on a Plane. Also, being able to view the top ten or something would be nice. I don’t have the time to listen to 425 songs, 95% of which are probably complete shit.

Comment by landrobot — April 20, 2006 @ 4:38 pm

A few of these artists are actually unnamed. Yet one of them has already garnered over 240 votes out of sheer sex appeal. (And no, his track - hollywood.mp3 - does not contain any snakes, just a hyperinflation of Samuel L. Jackson’s reputation, at best. At least my love song incorporates the overall story from the POV of a sideline character.) Contrast this with some of the tracks featured in this site, most of which so far have less than 30 each. (I don’t even see DC Lugi in there. WTF!? I don’t see mine, either, but that’s another story.)

If I had known the browsing system would be this bad, I would have picked 3SD for a name.

In addition to sorting by Highest Votes, they should also sort by Lowest Votes, to give underdogs a chance.

My 2 cents,
W. C. Buba

Comment by W. C. Buba — April 20, 2006 @ 9:42 pm

BTW, I don’t see Subatomic Warp there, either, if that’s what DC Lugi is using for a TagWorld ID.

But if this is the first time anyone’s holding a soundtrack inclusion contest online, perhaps we should be a little more forgiving, since it hasn’t been done before.

Comment by W. C. Buba — April 20, 2006 @ 9:55 pm

This is Legit H. If you sort by all genres, and then by name, there’s some really lame asshole who’s song is called “hollywood.mp3″ and he’s racking up the votes.

It isn’t SoaP related. It’s like boy band ish and really scummy sounding. We’re cooking up a diss track for his ass by the end of the weekend and it’d be cool if you guys threw up some props for it once its up at tagworld.com/f16soapcrew, even if you don’t want to vote for our song or even like it at all.

Tagworld obviously has no quality control, so we’re all in this together now.

By the way after a little bit of searching I found most of you guys who submitted songs on the list just the searching thru 450 songs sucks. As for the hollywood.mp3 song I suspect that someone is rigging the votes like this shit is American Idol. I am now trying to rally support from other boards to vote only for SoaP theme’d songs so hopefully we can turn back the tide of crap. In the mean time I think you can just use fake and old email addresses to register and get more votes. If that NSync wannabe bastard wins we can only hope that Sammy J refuses the song based off the fact that it lacks any balls whats so ever.

Comment by snakecharmer — April 20, 2006 @ 11:42 pm

We thought our track “THERE’S SO MANY WAYS I CAN KILL YOU” would be quite fitting for SOAP, so we submitted it.

Hopefully you TagWorld users will dig it too…

As for the voting system, ugh. I’ll echo what others are saying in that it’s impossible to find stuff; you have to scroll through pages and pages of tracks to find specific ones, you can’t see the most popular, etc. Flawed, certainly, but hopefully it gets somebody’s worthwhile track into the movie.

Comment by Madsumo — April 20, 2006 @ 11:44 pm

Comment by snakecharmer — April 21, 2006 @ 12:55 am

Futuristic Sex Robots ’snakes on a plane’ song is the best IMHO.

Vote for that if you’re doing this TAG thing. What are some of the other best ones? I have a few more votes left. I’m not about to waste my time with all of them, I’m sure some of you have some great ones picked out.

Comment by landrobot — April 21, 2006 @ 12:56 am

[...] Ok, yesterday I badmouthed the Tagworld contest website listing all sorts of problems with the website itself and the voting in particular.  It looks like they’ve taken the time to clean up a lot of my initial problems.  For example, the “random” sort now actually shows you different songs each time, the vote counters seem to work, the pop-ups aren’t nearly as confusing, and you get to see 12 (up from 10) songs per page.  They still don’t allow you to scroll quickly to bands in the depths of the alphabet (bands starting with the letter ‘Z’ are screwed) and there’s no way to show the top vote getters, but I’m glad they fixed a lot of the problems.  I’m still dismayed by the sheer number of bands that are in the pool with songs totally unrelated to the movie, but hopefully we can vote them out (and hopefully New Line won’t pick one of those as the winner). Anyway, reader snakecharmer was nice enough to tally the current leaders in the comments to my last post.  Here’s the current vote tally: 10. The guesstimates with Two snakes on a plane 62 votes 9. Shanky Drank with Final Snakes 63 8. Kyle.mcmahon with gone 72 votes 7. Wizardz of Ryhme with planes on a Snakes 80 votes 6. Runaway Pheonix with Snakes on a Plane 90 votes 5. Ben Rusch wiuth Wash your Mouth out 111 votes 4. Zachery with Serious Problem 117 votes 3. 50412 with Sankes on a plane 120 votes 2. Futuristic Sex Robots with Snakes on a Plane at 255 votes 1. Hollywood.mp3 at 272 votes [...]

UPDATE

Hey folks new count in and I cleaned the list up a bit and added which songs which were Snake, Plane, or Snake on a plane related (SOAP) and which ones were just American Idol bullshit ( BS) trying to steal our thunder…

10. The guesstimates with Two Snakes on a Plane 63 votes (SOAP)
9. Shanky Drank with Final Snakes 64 (SOAP)
8. Kyle.mcmahon with Gone 73 votes (BS)
7. Wizardz of Rhyme with Planes on a Snakes 82 votes (SOAP)
6. Runaway Pheonix with Snakes on a Plane 90 votes (SOAP)
5. Ben Rusch with Wash your Mouth out 111 votes (BS)
4. Zachery with Serious Problem 117 votes (SOAP)
3. 50412 with Snakes on a Plane 120 votes (SOAP)
2. Futuristic Sex Robots with Snakes on a Plane at 260 votes (SOAP)
1. Hollywood.mp3 at 277 votes (BS)

also I have been monitoring the voting for a few hours now and I noticed a few irregularities that have been bothering me. I aint calling this a 2000 presidential election or anything just susicipous of the constant upstream in Hollywood.mp3 votes. I mean maybe the guy has dedicated fans that are cosntantly upvoting him but still I feel this vote may need an impartial UN observer……There is the possibilty of snakes in the voting machine

Comment by snakecharmer — April 21, 2006 @ 2:26 am

Hmmmm. It all seems like the Hollywood machine is ignoring the snake element….

How come that Fenton Barnes tune didnt get thru?? it rocks!!

Comment by Chuck — April 21, 2006 @ 7:38 am

[...] I’m personally curious how far he thinks he would have come without having ‘L’ as his middle initial, but I’m not sure if that would make the cut.  There were some problems with the first contest, and it took an awfully long time to get results, but hopefully they’ve fine tuned their testing process and everything will run a little bit more smoothly this time. [...]
