Snakes on Me in Entertainment Weekly
April 9th, 2006 at 10:39 pm

I’ve been quoted in this week’s Entertainment Weekly, but I don’t really like how it turned out. I must have stumbled through my now standard answer to the “has the publicity already peaked” question. What I apparently said was “I feel bad, because this has hit a plateau, I don’t know if it will keep going up.” What I normally say is something about how it’s unreasonable to expect publicity for any event to build in a straight line from zero to extremely high, peaking right when the event occurs. You have to expect peaks and valleys along the way. No, I don’t think the media attention will stay as sharply focused from now until August as it has been for the last two weeks, but I do think that there will be peaks again again in the future… for example when they release the official poster, or trailer, or when the actors start doing real PR. This was but one peak in a long process. That’s how I meant to answer.

But then again, they really shouldn’t be asking me for publicity predictions. I don’t work in Hollywood and I know nothing about how to publicize a movie. They really should be asking “buzz” questions to New Line, or someone on their own staff. They’ve dealt with this kind of thing before, I haven’t.

Anyway, for those of you interested here’s a link to the Entertainment Weekly story (subscription required) on their website and here’s scans of the two pages from the actual magazine (no subscription required):

I am a big fan of their graphic, it looks great. They also mention in the story that to make the movie more ‘R’ rated they’ve added “blood and breasts” as well as gorier death scenes.

Every time someone quotes David Ellis, he sounds really excited about the movie. I wonder if that’s just something you do with every movie you work on, or if it’s genuine?

Yeah, I’m a subscriber, I noticed your comment the other day. As for his excitement, in this case I imagine it is genuine. He has to be pleasantly surprised by how things have turned out. After all, how many times does a filmmaker get called in by the studio to add stuff into a movie, instead of remove it?

No one, not even New Line, appears to know what’s happening right now with the massive interest in Snakes. As a matter of fact, the articles I’ve read lead me to believe that most of the entertainment mavens are completely clueless about what’s going on. The lead-up to Snakes on a Plane is, if I may say so, a completely new beast.

Many of the so-called experts seem to believe that the buzz can’t continue all the way through to August. For example, that April 7 piece in the Toronto Star by Peter Howell, in which he compared the early Snakes buzz to the early buzz that hurt the latest Star Wars movie and will possibly hurt the upcoming United 93. But it should be more-than-obvious that Snakes on a Plane is not Star Wars or United 93 and that the reasons for the early interest in each of the films is way different. The manifold reasons for the early interest in Snakes, and the fact that it is 100% fan-generated, has the potential to keep that interest high for a very long time.

I have to say that most of the reporters I’ve spoken to about the movie have seemed borderline shocked at the fan interest. This could explain why they anticipate its imminent collapse. They don’t fully understand why people are interested, hence they can’t see a reason that that interest would stretch out over a number of months. I guess I haven’t been pointing out that people have already been interested in this movie for months… people started talking about it last August and it hasn’t ended yet.

We’ll see.

I stand behind my peaks and valleys prediction, though.

I agree with you though, that’s the way the reporting mind works, like a hyperactive child with ADHD, they’ll start focusing on something trivial, like the war in iraq, then go back to something like a sniper in the upper Charleston area, and when something new happens (the internet’s allways the first to know, btw) they’ll come back to us and start all over again.

My peak perdictions: Official Trailer, slow news days, and/if someone online does something either crazy, dangerous, or news catching (such as someone trying to break into a plane with a few garder snakes or somesuch), and of course, whenever Sammy says anything about the movie.

These are just perdictions… so they could all be wrong. Escept the official trailer part. That I’m sure of… damn sure of…

Peaks and Valleys? nah. Somedays I can’t go an hour without thinking about Snakes on A Plane. If me and my boyfriend break up it will be because I keep quoting the movie/ talking about it.

ME:*in bad Sam Jackson immitation* Motherfuckin Snakes! Damn!
Him: *exasperated* When does this movie come out again?
Me: *still in bad impersonation mode* August motherfucker! AUGUST!
Him: Dammit.

Who else would definitely buy a t-shirt with that Sam/Snakes/Plane design in that article? It rules.
