Snakes on an Official Logo

(UPDATE: EW published the wrong official logo, here’s the NEW logo.)

Entertainment Weekly scooped me today (I’m hurt, New Line) with the official logo for Snakes on a Plane. Here you go:

Snakes on a Blog Snakes on a Plane Official Logo

It combines the graphic that they recently posted on their official webpage with a crossed snake design which is remiscient of a few things we’ve seen previously.

According to the EW story David Ellis claims the logo was borne out of fan-graphics like Defamer’s early images. Additionally the idea is partially linked to the medical logo which is apparently called a caduceus… decide for yourself:

They also acknowledged that there’s a lot of obvious options for a tagline:

“We have so many taglines that go from sublime to ridiculous,” says New Line’s marketing head Russell Schwartz. ”You could obviously put [on the poster]: ‘If the food doesn’t kill you, they will.”

This is going to be the greatest event in human history. I’m serious..I mean what else comes close? The second coming of Christ? BAH! And i say this as a devout Catholic…jesus, do NOT come back the day of the premiere of Snakes on A Plane!!!!

‘If the food doesn’t kill you, they will’ seems like a pretty good tagline to me. If they decide to stick with that one, I could be happy with it. Although whatever tagline they come up with, it’ll be pretty redundant; the title of this movie is so straightforward and perfect, there’s really no need for any other slogan, motto, subtitle, anything like that. Hell, if they wanted, they could put absolutely nothing on the movie’s promo posters except the words ‘Snakes on a Plane’, and I’d still want to buy one.

“Snakes. Plane.”

Are some weblogging folks out there getting paid to hype “snakes on a plane”? I was quite interested in this at first but I’m starting to feel like I’m being virally marketed to. Perhaps no one realizes yet that you can’t simply buy word of mouth publicity (or can you?)

EVEN if this is the best film EVER, I’ve still already heard way too much about it.

Attention PR folks - Blog Saturation level achieved, save some budget for the non-web people!!!

I haven’t been paid a dime… I am, admittedly, still looking for free tickets.

Does that count?

As far as I know, none of it is studio induced. Do you have particular examples that seem bad/questionable? I’d love to out them.

And honestly, I’d like to think that the studio could come up with a better website than THIS if they were going to be funding this stuff out of pocket.

Jackson already gave them the tagline: “You either want to see it, or you don’t.”

Comment by DC Snakester — March 23, 2006 @ 12:29 pm

Nobody could make a better website than this.

Congrats, Brian, on the CNN interview. I hereby cede my attempts to be THE internet home for SoaP! I bow before your awesomeness!

Seriously, though…congrats. I hope you’ll post pictures from the premiere!

I agree with dc snakester there, Jackson gave them the tagline. And the new logo will look damn good on any promotional material or t-shirt or whatever.

Also, viral and pre-fabricated hype is one thing (usually really badly orchestrated, like Microsofts Origami campaign or Nikes Joga football campaign here in Europe), this another. Don’t try to create a backlash now, this a damn cultural movement and New Line just acknowledged it.

The tagline should be “Snakes on a Plane!”

Snakes on a Plane: Snakes on a Plane!

I am a total nerd for noting that the Caduceus (two snakes) is technically the symbol for “commerce”, while the Rod of Asclepius (one snake) is the true symbol for the medical profession.

Does it come without the god damn name on it? email me back..I want that on a t-shirt.
