Snakes on a ReShoot
March 14th, 2006 at 9:55 am

Last week Snakes on a Plane did five days of reshoots to bring the film’s rating from a PG-13 to an R. I received an email today from someone who worked on the set who gave an interesting description of what went on. It’s got a few borderline spoilers, so I’d recommend not reading it unless you’re willing to have some surprises unveiled:

As you may be well aware, Snakes On A Plane just finished doing some reshoots lastweek at The Lot in Hollywood (a far cry from their original Vancouver set) to bump the movie’s rating from a safe PG-13 to an R. I was on the crew, and I’ll tell you what I know.

Samuel L. Jackson, Kenan Thompson, Nathan Phillips and Bruce James were among the group brought back for reshoots to up the anty in previously filmed scenes and shoot additional ones I think Bruce James was the only one to shoot new scenes they added for him. He is HILARIOUS as the effeminate Ken and it seems like they were trying to give him more screen time. BEGIN SPOILER (Highlight the white space to read the mini-spoiler): Samuel L. Jackson did a lot of swearing and if you’re wondering what his big line is going to be for this movie I think people are right on the money so far in their assumptions. He is awesome. END OF MINI SPOILER.

Otherwise, some things got blown up (snakes???….blowing up??…on a plane??), and everyone was very excited to see some of the CGI scenes which look pretty amazing already and some of them are not even finished yet. On the last day of shooting David Ellis gathered the crew together and played the Best Fan Song from your site into speakers for us all to listen to and a lot of laughter ensued.

Anyways, just thought you’d want to know that he knows about the BLOG. So does New Line. You may not be that far way from that ticket to the premiere as you thought.

Pretty exciting, eh?

what is this crap? I find it kind of lame that they’re intentionally putting in “snakes on a motha****ing plane!” lines to cater to their newfound audience. they’re remaking the movie to fit somebody’s parody of it? I think I would have enjoyed the pg13, less self-concious version.

Oh please, an R rated version means MORE Sam Jackson cursing and exploding snakes!!! WTF, thats GOLD!!!!!

Uh, not that I mind or anything, but there’s really no reason to self-bleep if you don’t want to.

You moron, it’s a movie about Snakes on a Plane, not Schlinder’s List. I can’t believe you’d actually waste time typing your anger at then putting in a line to cater to its “new found audience”.

It’s a movie.. about fucking snakes on a Plane… seriously dude… what the fuck? Are you the lone moron here expecting Oscar Award Winning Cinema?

Comment by Chris, you're a dumbass — March 17, 2006 @ 11:50 am

This is the first time I’ve heard of a movie reshooting to *raise* a rating from PG-13 to R. I’m sick of action movies lowering their ratings to reach a wider audience; this is absolutely a step in the right direction. I… can’t… wait.

[...] David Ellis has given an interview to Bloody-Disgusting.com, where he talks about Snakes on a Plane. Some pieces of information revealed include the budget ($30 million), the official trailer release date (sometime in May), who greenlit the extra-vulgar extra-gorey reshoots (the president of New Line), and his thoughts on the unofficial/official trailer: Yes, we had over 500 real, non-venomous snakes as well as some CGI snakes. The trailer, which is currently making the rounds on the Internet, is rather rough. The shot of the woman with the snake coming out of her blouse needs tweaking as do a few others – when we’re finished with post, all of the snakes will be photo-real. Our visual effects teams, Hybrid, led by Erik Henry, and Asylum FX, are hard at work. [...]

[...] It was somewhat obvious where the new scenes had been added. It’s too bad the movie hadn’t been conceived as an R-rated feature from day 1, but that’s ok. We got it in the end. And so did Keenan’s fellow bodyguard. [...]

[...] I started a webpage last year called Snakes on a Blog that focused on the remarkable amount of fan produced art, songs, videos, and merchandise associated with that film. The scale of fan-based participation in a movie which had not yet been released in any form garnered a lot of attention (examples: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6). In the end, the level of interest induced New Line to re-shoot the film to more closely match fan expectations. [...]
