Snakes on a Comic XII (UPDATED)

Friday, March 31st, 2006

(Updated at 9:02 am)

It’s been a while since I’ve posted comics, but here are two three:

Snakes on a Blog Snakes on a Plane Comics Snakes on a Blog Snakes on a Plane Comics Snakes on a Blog Snakes on a Plane Comic

Please forgive me, but with all the excitement of the past week, and all the hundreds of emails I’ve gotten, and all of my outside work, I’ve gotten bad about keeping track where things have come from. If I leave things unattributed, I apologize. Leave a note in the comments and I’ll give full credit. So, the second comic is from Heaneyland, the same guy who did Snakes on a Sudoku a few days ago. I’m no longer sure where the other second comic came from. The third is from Real Life.

Also, if you check out the counter at the very bottom of the page, you’ll see that this page is about to cross 200,000 visitors. Thanks!

Snakes on a Music Video II (UPDATED)

Thursday, March 30th, 2006

A few days ago I posted about a Snakes on a Plane music video contest in Boston put on by Zebro. Well it went off yesterday to a packed house and they’ve been kind enough to provide the top three videos for our enjoyment. Here we go:

100%: A SoaP Tribute is a catchy pop song with a lot of dancing. Better dancing than I could ever, ever accomplish. Also some Play-Dough. Snakes on an MP3 is a rap song. Fly Snakes Fly is a plaintive ballad. They’re all good. Enjoy.

I just added Baby, Baby, Baby (Shed Yo Skin). It wasn’t in the final three, it’s more of a Soul/R&B style song.

UPDATED: I just added Snakes on a Plane, also not a finalist, it’s got more of a singer-songwriter vibe. Also, Zebro has now set up their own SoaP website to house these songs.

Snakes on Fan Fiction

Thursday, March 30th, 2006

I’ve come across two different, independant Snakes on a Plane fan fiction sites today.  Who knew?

The first is Snakes in a Fic, a newly formed LiveJournal community dedicated to Snakes on a Plane fan fiction. But, not just fiction about Snakes on a Plane, but fan fiction about Snakes on a Plane AND another TV show or movie. Currently there’s two submissions: Snakes and the City (Sex and the City) and Snakes on Serenity (Firefly).

Here’s a quick excertp from Snakes on Serenity:

Simon let go of his sister’s arm and swallowed hard. He didn’t like snakes, even the mention of them made him feel nervous.

“There..there ain - aren’t any snakes on Serenity, River. We’re far far away from any possible snakes.”

“Jayne.”

“Well, yes, he’s a kind of a snake, but the human kind and I’ll make sure that he never hurts my beautiful little sister,”

The other one is, unfortunately, Snakes ON a Fic.  Not really much difference in the names there.  Again it’s a LiveJournal community dedicated to Snakes on a Plane fan fiction, but this one is centered on stories that happen on the actual plane.  For example, the short story dealing with the last minutes of the life of the cat in the trailer entitled Fluffkins’ No Good, Horrible, Very Rotten [Last] Day:

When I saw the creature, I was to the point of desperation where anyone would have sufficed. Anyone. And that was my downfall. My fatal weakness. I thought I could trust him. His voice was so smooth. So calming. So tender, even. He offered me a way out, said he knew a way to leave my confinement and be free once again! Freedom! The word was like catnip to my senses, like buttery cream to my tongue. Oh, how I craved freedom from my cage. He told me that he would show me the way out, but that first I had to let him in.  Oh, that forked tongue, how it lied!

Wow.

That’s it. It’s gone too far. I don’t think any of us can really comprehend the mind-shattering ramifications of Snakes on a Sudoku:

Snakes on MSNBC (HEAVILY UPDATED)

Wednesday, March 29th, 2006

Updated at 11:35pm.

In the last few days I’ve gotten a number of calls for interviews. Today I did an interview with MSNBC for Countdown with Keith Olbermann. I don’t yet know when it’s going to air. I did not, alas, speak to Keith Olbermann himself… oh well.

It was tough.

I’ve never done a TV interview before, and I’m pretty sure I’ve ascertained that my future career can’t involve a lot of TV face time. I sat down and had a hard time getting clear answers out. I’ve done enough phone interviews lately that I can do those without too much difficulty, but I just got nervous with the camera and the lights. I wonder how fidgety I was.
Alan, my cameraman/technician (I didn’t get his official title), was very friendly and helpful. Hopefully I gave them enough footage that they can pull something where I don’t mumble too much. My guess is they’re going to show me talking about the site’s stats… it’s hard to mess that up too much.

Here’s a few pictures I took of the setup in the apartment. I blurred out Alan, I don’t know if he wants to be on the internet.

They didn’t know when the piece would air, I’ll try to post when it’s coming on. It should be sometime in the next couple of days. Hopefully someone out there with some technology can grab it for me.

Snakes on an Official Webpage

Wednesday, March 29th, 2006

The official Snakes on a Plane website has listed Snakes on a Blog as the fan site of the week. They put the link up a few days ago but I didn’t get around to mentioning it today. I figured I pretty much had to if I wanted to stop the constant flow of emails letting me know.

Here’s a screenshot of the webpage:

Snakes on a Real Plane II

Wednesday, March 29th, 2006

A few days I posted about nootropic describing his calls to a few airlines to find out if he could bring Snakes on a Plane. I lamented at the time that he didn’t record his phone calls… I assumed they’d be funny. Well, it seems as though Philip had the same idea that I had. Here we go:

These things are RIPE for remixing, have at it.

Snakes on a Role Playing Game

Wednesday, March 29th, 2006

Over at the RPGnet Forums someone named Deacon Blues has posted “SNAKES ON A PLANE - The Roleplaying Game of Personal Discovery, Dire Combat, and Motherf&*%ing Snakes.” Here’s a bit from the instructions to the “SnakeMaster” running the game:

As the Snakemaster, it’s your duty to keep the characters moving. There will be a great temptation by the players to keep the characters in their seats. Since dialogue doesn’t incur the risk of snake attacks, they may just sit there screaming, “Oh god, we’re going to die” or “Can’t somebody do something?” or “Get these motherfucking snakes off this motherfucking plane!”

Do not allow this to happen! You must constantly confront the players with events that challenge their characters’ Stories. Get them out of the seats. They should be running up and down the aisles, screaming and fighting and carrying on. Throw things at them to force them to act. Every action they take brings with it the risk of snake attack, and snake attacks drive the narrative.

Who’s up for a game?

Snakes on Songs VII

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

I’ve got two Snakes songs for you today:

New Cobra Mix by THE SLATS

Funky Snakes on a Funky Plane by hench

The first one is really good and well produced, which is always a plus. The second was a submission to the tagworld contest and isn’t specifically about snakes… it’s an instrumental. Take a look if you’re interested.

Ok, I was emailed this somewhat strange file tonight that takes clips from the recent NPR piece, the older NPR piece, and the possible Samuel L. Jackson audio clip and puts them over a beat. I’m not entirely clear on the point, but I present to you:

Snakes on Early Auditions

Monday, March 27th, 2006

This is a great video called Early Auditions put together by DCLugi who previously worked with Subatomic Warp (check out the great audio trailer and the best fan song). It actually reminds me of a skit Saturday Night Live did about famous actors auditioning for Star Wars. Here you go:

Snakes on a Hockey Team

Monday, March 27th, 2006

A member of the newly named Snakes on a Plane Hockey hockey team emailed me to let me know that they have a webpage at SoapHockey.com. They were formerly known as the Cobras (boring) and they play in St. Louis but, sadly, they lost their first game to the similarly oddly named “Clown Punch.” Oh well.

Snakes on a Screenwriter Q&A

Saturday, March 25th, 2006

This should be fun, yesterday I received an email (excerpted below) from David Dalessandro, the original author of the Snakes on a Plane story. He’s agreed to do a little Q&A with Snakes on a Blog readers so if you have a question about the original story, or the screenwriting process, post it in the comments and I’ll forward the best one’s along.

Here’s part of his email:

Just thought you would want to know that the WGA has just awarded me “story by” credit for Snakes, shared with Heffernan. Hasn’t made it to IMDB and such yet, but it’s legit.

You see, I wrote the original spec script for the movie, which was optioned by Craig Berenson. It was rewritten several times, but the basic premise and most of the action sequences came from my spec script. The biggest change was the hero, who I had as a sort of Indiana Jones type and my script had a good deal more lore about snakes. Samuel Jackson coming on turned out to be inspired, so I have no complaints.

So, help me put together some questions and we’ll get some background on the movie.

Suggest away.

Snakes on a Video

Saturday, March 25th, 2006

The sketch comedy folks at Loading.Ready.Run have a 5 minute video entitled “Snakes on the Brain” about boardroom full of executives trying to think of sequels for Snakes on a Plane. I’m getting too bogged down with life to take screenshots from the video, but it’s pretty funny.

I think my favorite was Snakes on a Smaller Boat… together with Snakes on a Boat and Snakes on a Dinghy it forms a “thrill-ogy.”

They also throw out the idea of Snakes on a Submarine, which a reader points out is actually a real tv movie from the 70’s called Fer de Lance where:

An American submarine leaves Tierra Del Fuego, and one of its crew has secretly brought aboard a container full of poisonous snakes which escape storage and bite key personnel on the submarine, causing an accident that cripples the vehicle so that it drops to the bottom of the Southern Ocean. Worse still, the snakes are still at large on the submarine and complicate the efforts of the crew to escape the sunken vessel.

Anyway, enjoy the video.
