Snakes on Fan Video

Monday, February 20th, 2006

Ok, it’s not strictly about Snakes on a Plane, but this flash video has been floating around the net for a few weeks, and since I’ve had a slow couple of days I figured I’d throw it up.

Snakes on a Blog Snakes on a Plane Ultimate Showdown
Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny by Neil Cicierega and altffour

This video documents a very, very complicated pop-culture fight and Samuel L. Jackson makes a quick but recognizable cameo with a few snakes. If you blink, you’ll miss it. Another point of interest, the song was written and recorded by Lemon Demon, who previously recorded this Snakes on a Plane fan song.

Snakes on a Sound Bite

Monday, February 20th, 2006

A few days ago Samuel L. Jackson (SLJ) gave an interview on NPR’s All Things Considered (stream here) about Freedomland and, eventually, Snakes on a Plane. The other Snakes on a Blog transcribed that portion of the interview as well as pointed out this MP3 clip.

So, anyone interested in making more Fan Songs/Audio, should feel to grab the clip. Additionally, you may want to use the SLJ soundboard for a broader range of SLJ expressions.

Enjoy.

Snakes on a Blog, ASAP

Friday, February 17th, 2006

The ASAP AP story ran last night. I hate seeing words that I’ve said out-loud printed. They never end up on paper the way they sounded in my head. Aside from that, the article is pretty nice. I do like the phrase “irony-philic.”

I don’t know if the story is going to be picked up by print newspapers, but if swarms of new people should show up in the next few days, you should take a look at Fan Art, Fan Songs, Fan Comics, Fan Shirts and Fan Videos.

Enjoy.

Snakes on a Blog on the ASAP

Thursday, February 16th, 2006

I got a call this afternoon from a reporter with the AP. Well, sort of with the AP. In fact he’s with a new-ish offshoot of the AP called ASAP. Apparently it’s a subset of the AP that writes and runs stories geared towards a younger market. He’s writing a story about blog marketing, and, I think, the issues of authenticity in a medium where authenticity is the only currency people have to offer. He asked me a bunch of questions on that issue, circling towards it from a few different directions. I answered the questions, uniformly, poorly.

The real question seemed to be, if I was running this webpage because I worked for New Line, would it still have a draw? Would people be willing to read what I have to say if I was being paid a salary? My uneven attempts to answer that question most likely failed, but the point I was trying to convey was that I’m in a little bit of a unique situation. I, unlike other blogs, am creating very little unique content. It doesn’t matter if I am a corporate shill or not, what matters is that the content that’s being collected here isn’t shill content.

My goal from day one on this project was, in a sense, to become co-opted. I started this webpage to track my efforts to get to the Hollywood premiere of Snakes on a Plane. I thought that, if successful, the webpage itself could help to put me in touch with people who could help me to achieve that goal. My goal was to sell out, I want to be bought… for the cheap, cheap price of a few tickets.

And if that means that I’m being used by New Line, so be it. I’m marketing thier movie for free, I know that. But it’s also the case that New Line’s being used by me. In the end, I hope, I’m going to achieve my goal. They get publicity, and I get to see a movie. Win-win.

However, if anybody’s wondering, I am not being paid by New Line. When I started this quest I didn’t know anybody at New Line, nor did I know anybody who knew anybody at New Line. It’s been over a month, and although I’ve had a few interesting conversation with people on the inside, there’s nothing official for me to discuss quite yet, but I’m excited about what the future might hold.

So it’s entirely possible that I will sound like a shill in this article. If so, it’s because I’m a poor interviewee. Look for it around the end of this week or early next week… assuming I don’t get cut from the piece.

Snakes in the News IV

Thursday, February 16th, 2006

Samuel L. Jackson appears to be doing the press junket for Freedomland, and he’s getting asked questions about our favorite film. Here’s what he’s had to say:

  • Monsters And Critics - “Next up, he`ll portray an FBI agent in the action drama ‘Snakes on a Plane,’ whose title is self-explanatory. ‘They were thinking about changing it to `Pacific Flight 121,` and I said, `why?`’ he recalls. ‘They said they didn`t want to give away the secret and I said, `yes you do.` When I opened the script and saw the title, I knew I wanted to do the movie.’”
  • Dark Horizons - “Actually you know we had a great time on this film. I tend to see movie sets as a fun kind of playground and all the stuff that I need to know and do I prepared myself to do. Interestingly enough Julianne is almost like a mirror image of me. So when we got through with the rehearsal process and we were ready to go and when we got to set Julianne and I could stand there and talk about baseball, basketball, her kids and I think at the time she was real caught up in American Idol and she was watching it all the time so she was talking about ‘oh and Bo was so good today I really hope he stays tonight an it is going to be so good’. So she would go in an out of it like you know boom, boom, boom so we had just such a great time. But to answer your question in another was I do still like doing films that are just kind of visceral thrills that I use to go and see when I was kid you know. You know what is going to happen so when I opened that script that day and it said “Snakes on a Plane” I went, ‘I don’t even need to do read this, I’ll do this’, you know if it is what I think it is, I am going to do it! You know… ” On being upstaged by a snake: “I don’t know, we’ll talk about that when we get to that junket [laughter].
  • Seattle Times - “‘I’m still that guy who likes to see myself in something mindless and exciting,’ he says. ‘I don’t want to do heavy movies all year long. I want to do films people scream at.’ To demonstrate, he lets out a blood-curdling scream. ‘That’s why the next picture I’m making is ‘Snakes on a Plane.”
  • Charleston Post and Courier & Entertainment Weekly both run standard “everybody’s talking about this movie, there’s so much anticipation and fan involvement on the internet” stories. The EW one, however, requires a membership to view the whole story.

I’m still excited about the story describing people getting bitten in the face by snakes hanging down like oxygen masks.

Snakes on the Web V

Thursday, February 16th, 2006

Steve pointed me to a posting on the IMDB forum for Snakes on a Plane written by an actor who played a passenger in the film, here’s what she had to say about it:

“I was lucky enough to be one of the first wave of passengers to die on this snake infested airplane and I just wanted to tell you my little story. This movie knows what it is, and has alot of fun with it. Every single day on set we had a BALL, the lot of us; it was like playing. Every take was different and improvisation was encouraged and I have a feeling the rediculous fun it took making the film will be apparent to anyone who’s gonna pay up to watch ‘Snakes On A Plane’. I also thought I might clarify that David Ellis did not write the film, so one wouldn’t assume he’d have to have majored in Biology or even more specifically Snake Anatomy 101. In fact I read the script and, as it turns out, accuracy and believability don’t really matter in a film entitled SNAKES ON A PLANE! But, come on, it’s not like they sneak HUNDREDS of snakes on board via somebodys purse; especially the GIANT bugger! Wait ’til you see him! My bet is this movie is going to make people laugh and just have fun. There were plenty of trainers and snake enthusiasts like yourself on set who seemed to understood suspension of disbelief, so give it a shot yourself and you just might enjoy the show.”

It’s nice to hear about the actors enjoying the film. Mainly, though, it just seemed important to get those horrible animated gifs off the top of the page. Phew.

Snakes in the News III

Monday, February 13th, 2006

I’m annoyed.

As part of my quest to attend the Snakes on a Plane premiere, I’ve been in touch with a few people involved with the film. Just yesterday I’d heard from enough different people that scenes with Samuel L. Jackson were being reshot to bring the movie up from a PG-13 to a solid R. I was going to post it online today. It was going to be a scoop. I was going to get to wear one of those “PRESS” hats like Drudge.

Alas, it looks like I wasn’t the only person who knew. The Boston Globe today published an interview with Samuel L. Jackson in which he reveals the same piece of information:

A voracious reader, Jackson goes through up to seven scripts a week, always relying on his innercineaste and fanboy to help him choose his roles. He’s a lover of all projects gory and unusual, so the upcoming ”Snakes on a Plane” was a no-brainer.

”As soon as I opened the script and saw the title, I was like, ‘Cool!’ Hopefully that’s not a euphemism for something else,” says Jackson with a laugh. ”And sure enough, I go there and there’s 500 snakes on a plane. Can you believe they were going to change the name to ‘Pacific Air 121′? What is that?

”Next week, I’m going to shoot some additional footage to amp up the snakedom. Why go PG when you can be R?” asks Jackson.

As a friend of mine mentioned, it looks as though the response from the internet is having a hand in shaping the film. Based on the language people online are using, they’re clearly looking for an ‘R’ rating, and now, thanks to all the early buzz, that’s exactly what we’re going to get. God bless the Internet.

Side note: I might want to see the movie where Snakes on a Plane is a euphamism for something.

Snakes on a Blog III

Sunday, February 12th, 2006

It’s about time for another recap of how this blog is doing so far.

I’ve been online for 30 days. I’ve had about 10,000 visitors. I’ve posted 52 stories. There have been 45,000 requests for pages, and a staggering 650,000 requests for other files (these are mostly people hotlinking to images and comics that I’ve hosted and posting them on other forums around the net). I’ve transferred 13 gigabytes of data. The most popular day of the week is Friday. The most popular hour of the day is between 10pm and 11pm. I’ve gotten two free t-shirts.

And yet, as a freind pointed out yesterday:

your blog has pretty much degenerated into free advertising for free advertising for a movie called Snakes on A Plane. remember when you were going to blog your progress in getting tickets to the premiere?”

I haven’t forgotten, but I admit that it’s easy to get bogged down. I even set up a category for news about the premiere itself, but alas, I haven’t yet had the opportunity to use it. All I can say, so far, is that I’ve had a couple of interesting nibbles. I’ve had a few conversations with a few interesting people, and I’m definitely moving in the right direction. As soon as I can say more, I will. At the moment, though, nothing is written in stone and I still need your help!

Read my first plea. Read my second plea. Think about everyone you know in Hollywood, and pass this webpage to them. Let them know that there’s one person out there who has dreams so small that they can be achieved by the receipt of a few paltry tickets to a single Hollywood premiere.

Snakes on the Web IV

Sunday, February 12th, 2006

First, unsurprisingly, Samuel L. Jackson has an official webpage. It has an interview on it from August which I haven’t seen before:

SamuelLJackson.com:
You also are just wrapping up on “Snakes on a Plane” Tell us a little bit about it.

Samuel L. Jackson:
Snakes on a Plane – it’s exactly what it sounds like. They changed the name to “Pacific Flight 121” But there seems to be a clamor for it to go back to “Snakes on a Plane” and I’m part of the “Snakes on a Plane” group that’s one of the reasons I took the job. I either want to see that movie or I don’t. Because that’s what it is. I’m an F.B.I. agent transporting a witness from Hawaii to Los Angeles. Who saw this big mobster who we have been trying to catch for years, murder somebody. And the guy puts a crate load of snakes on the plane that release when we are in the middle of the ocean, so we have to go on and these 3-400 snakes are getting loose on the plane – all over. And they are killing passengers. We’re trying to blockade and keep them in one place and they get through that place.

SamuelLJackson.com:
How many snakes did you say? 400?

Samuel L. Jackson:
Yeah 400. a one point the air bags deploy and snakes and the airbags come down and they are biting people in the face. It’s real crazy.

Snakes coming down in place of air masks and biting people in the face! That sounds GREAT! Ok, next, two quick MySpace pages:
