Snakes on a Blog
Snakes on a Google
February 22nd, 2006 at 8:02 am

I made an impulse buy this morning.  Starting sometime today, I’m going to pay Google 1 cent everytime someone follows a link here when they search for “Snakes on a Plane“.  One penny!  Don’t everyone go do it, it’s costing me a penny.

Yeah, I feel stupid already.  It seemed funny at the time.

Hmm, don’t see any links yet.

BTW, if you want to be higher in Google’s resuls, you should put the phrase “snakes on a plane” in your title. So: “Snakes on a Blog: All About Snakes on a Plane” or something would increase your ranking (which, if you think about it, makes sense).

Yeah, I don’t actually understand the system. Apparently I had to bump it to 10 cents before it would run the ads… apparently the more popular your search, the more it costs to run the ad, even if nobody else it trying to run an ad on that search. So I bumped it for today, and it says its active, but it still isn’t showing up. Don’t know why.

It was a bad idea anyway.

What I really need to get a bump from google, is for them to increase my pagerank from ‘0′ to ‘anything above zero.’ One thing that’s always been annoying about Google is that they don’t seem to register incoming links quickly or accurately. I don’t know why. For example, searching for links to Snakes On a Blog comes up with zero hits (even though there are more than zero links out there. Even searching for links to crazymonk.org only comes up with one non-crazymonk.org page. Google has traditionally not dispalyed all the backlinks that it has (for some secret reason) but this seems lower than it should be.

SnakesOnABlog’s pagerank is 0. Crazymonk.org’s is 4. RumorsDaily’s is 6.

When the pagerank gets above zero, then the words in the title might start to matter. As it stands, I get about 60 people a day searching for snakes on a plane PLUS another word, which usually puts me in the top five on google. snakes on a plane comic, or snakes on a plane song, for example.

The words are probably used frequently enough in the pages themselves, that it’s not mandatory that they be in the title. Don’t know, though.

Hmm, you have lots of incoming links on technorati… I wonder what’s up with Google.

I was checking out MSN’s search the other day, and their data is much more up to date than Google’s… it made me consider switching. Then I felt dirty.

That being said, I’m also confused about this google discrepancy: search for Snakes on a Blog (without quotes) and this page is #1, search for “Snakes on a Blog” (with quotes) and it falls to somewhere around 30. Don’t know why, if anything you think the quotes would HELP this site. Can’t figure it out.

Oh, google updated. Snakes on a Blog now has a PageRank of 5 and a partial list of backlinks. Apparently google updates these things once every few months.

I’m starting to wonder if MSN search really is the way to go.
